Re: Things You Have Trouble Accepting As Canon
(Anonymous) 2013-02-24 12:07 am (UTC)(link)But that's how I justify it to myself. Cynically, I feel like there's a certain amount of covering to make sure they've got heterosexual cover for Troy (Abed can be weird and asexual, but they can't BOTH be unattached and that close to each other, that'd be gay).
Re: Things You Have Trouble Accepting As Canon
Like both of them are sort of trying to figure out who they are and part of that was "well this person's hot, let's try to be normal and see how it goes" and then the sex was really good so now they're in a relationship and they've been in it a bit too long. But neither of them are attached to it like at all. I feel like even if their breakup was explosive over something or other they would go back to being friends within a few days because neither of them seem to care about it all that much.
Troy and Britta are way better as friends. Some people just are, and that's totally ok. I thought all of the friendshippy "hey let's help Troy win his boyfriend over" stuff was endearing, but again didn't read as like a girlfriend thing. They just kind of seem like people who are in a relationship when all they really want to be is fuck buddies.
I think when Troy admits to himself that being in a relationship with two people just isn't working out (whenever that is) and Britta realizes that she doesn't need a man as a part of her life to feel like she's on track as an adult, Troy and Abed will get together and Britta will hang out with them and everyone will have fun times.
It's so weird how the writers treat Troy/Abed though, like, really weird. I don't think I've ever seen a non-canon baity slash pairing where the someone has called them boyfriends and they didn't go "no you don't understand it's Guy Love (tm)" Troy and Abed just. . .go along with it. The messages are so mixed Dx When do I just count it canon? Last season?
Re: Things You Have Trouble Accepting As Canon
(Anonymous) 2013-02-24 12:34 am (UTC)(link)It's like, if both Troy and Britta were in different places, I would be totally cool with them just being fuckbuddies. Actually I am totally cool with them just being fuckbuddies, I just wish THE SHOW would stop presenting it as Finally Britta's With A Good Guy and/or Finally Troy's Become A Man With A Real Girlfriend. Like you said, Troy has in the past treated Britta pretty shittily, depending on the episode, and it's not like Britta's the first Real Girlfriend Troy's had (I think the writers sometimes forget/ignore the fact that he was, like, the super-popular jock back in high school).
The way Troy and Abed are presented is definitely weird. I'm not 100% sure I even ship them sexually, but I definitely see them as soulmates, and I think they definitely see each other as soul mates: they're these two people who never really had someone who understood them, who never really got to be themselves and be accepted for it by anyone, until they met each other.
I feel like the writers tried to build a similar dynamic with Troy and Britta for a while at the tail end of last season, by making them both out to be kind of ditzy, but that was never really the point of Britta, and Troy's...not 100% that either. IDK, it just makes me really uncomfortable, the way they got shoved together beyond just the physical attraction, which I totally get, because they are both attractive people.
Re: Things You Have Trouble Accepting As Canon
Although I might not be as responsive this week as I would be others because I am moving on Saturday.
I am totally cool with them being fuck buddies! Britta has had a fuck buddy before, and Troy is in a perfect place to have a fuck buddy. I am great with them being good friends looking for a good time, and I am good with the idea that maybe Troy and Abed need a little space even to allow themselves to breathe and their relationship to mature. I am all over that.
I am not ok with what we're getting though. This relationship is uneven and unhealthy. Terrible partners, great as friends. Their relationship makes me uncomfortable and I have probably written what amounts to several papers in emails and various fandom spaces as to exactly why I hate Troy/Britta and the insidious and obvious ways in which is sucks, fails, and needs to die.
Troy and Abed are soulmates, and I don't care how they're together, but the show needs to stop fucking around and just GO WITH THEM BEING SOULMATES. If they're not sexual, that's fine, have them have fuck buddies or something, but they are not compatible for a relationship with anyone but each other right now, and maybe not ever.
