Blocked ear?

(Anonymous) 2013-02-24 12:55 am (UTC)(link)

I woke up to very little hearing in one of my ears today. I bought ear drops but the chemist didn't have syringes for washing out available.

Feels kind of stuffed far back and is giving me a bit of a headache. I'm going to go lay down while the ear drops do their thing but incase that doesn't work does anyone have home suggestions and/or preventitives?

It's a sunday so my chemist will be closed now.

I use a rubber bulb meant to suck up warm water and squirt it in my ear - same principle as the syringe or the water pick a clinic would use. I got mine at a drug store, though, so you'll have to wait until the chemist opens on Monday, unless there's another place you can get that kind of thing, like a grocery store or Walmart-equivalent.

Did you have a cold or the flu recently? Because it sounds like there is fluid in the canal between your nose ear and mouth and it is common after getting a stuffed nose. The only thing you can do at this point is to keep hydrated and let it clear up by itself. If there is pain in that ear, especially the sharp stabby kind, go see a doctor immediate because it probably means there is an infection.

I don't think so, my throat was sore a couple of weeks ago but that's about it. This ear, my left, has been clogged once before by build up but that's it. I don't usually experience ear problems

yeah if it starts to hurt I'll go to doc asap

Also? If the pain stops and you suddenly lose all your hearing that's bad news. I would go to the nearest emergency ASAP if I were you. You may have to scream and plead to get them to admit you, but do it, and don't let them stick you off in a corner somewhere once they do. Especially if it's an inner ear infection, you don't want to play around with that.

This might sound strange, but try nose-drops. There is a chance the blockage you are feeling is a result of sinus pressure/swelling. seeing as all that shit is connected, sometimes nose-drops end up doing the job.

If I wiggle me ear lobe around, I can sometimes hear a bit like I've managed to move the blockage before it clogs up again. The first round of ear drops didn't seem to do anything though. it's so annoying!

if I remember right, it could be caused by many things: infections (and the cure depends on what exactly is causing the infection), swelling of other things pressing down on the ear channel, earwax that went wrong, I think something to do with blood pressure, too?

I'm sure it can be a symptom of a bunch of other things too.

Well it's still there. It kinda feels like after you go swimming and there's water?

i've used Cerumol ear drops twice and tomorrow before work I'm going to try other chemists for the...bulb tip thing. Least my other ear is working and if it's not fixed by tuesday I'll go to the doc after work

(obviously if it starts being painful I'll skip work and go to the doctor. I work in a callcentre, they're gonna understand if I have sore ears/potential infection!)

but so far just feels kinda full and sometimes tickly. also i can hear myself breathing...
