Holding your eyes that open for that long is bound to start hurting after a while.
Give the poor characters better function of their eyelids.

The occasional squint isn't going to stop those eyes from hurting really bad after a while.
I said "better function", not "any function."
Although I don't know the range of expression Merida has, as I haven't seen Brave.
I just know that it looks weird / painful for all these animated characters to bug their eyes at you constantly. Not 24/7, but enough that they shouldn't be doing it.
