No, there are lots of people on ONTD are like "It's not faaaaair that he's attractive. Now I want Dany to be with him." It's pathetic.

I just.

I am trying to see how that is sexist.

The root of those complaints is that in the books Jorah is a creeper and kinda gross.

But in the show he's hot and thus it is tempting to ship him with Dany in spite of knowing his book canon grossness.

And that's why people complain.

You don't see how it's shallow at least? That they can't handle an attractive man being "bad" because of how hot he is?

Well yeah. It's shallow.

But being shallow isn't the same as being sexist.

Plus the show has toned down Jorah's creepiness anyway.

This. At this point in the show, they've kind of revealed Jorah's feelings, but he hasn't acted in any sexually inappropriate way towards Daenerys (yet).

And he seemed to stop spying out of genuine guilt, not because he wants to get in her pants.

Regardless of whether or not one likes the changes they've made, they run far deeper than just making him prettier. So far at least.

AND they aged up Dany - she's now... 16 or 17 instead of 12 or 13.

NAYRT, and I don't agree that it's sexist against Jorah, but it does seem kinda sexist against Dany that people apparently think she should be with him because he's attractive. Cause who cares about characterization, or how he treats her, or the fact that she has to explicitly tell him to stop ogling her all the time, because obv if he was hot she'd be all for it...

however, I haven't actually witnessed fans saying things like that about Jorah or Dany, probably because I'm just not that interested in them. SO I can't really say that this is happening, lol. But if it is I could see that it might be sexist depending on the way people are expressing it. Not against him, though, because being more forgiving to a character/person who is attractive isn't a gender-specific thing, it happens to men and women both...

Well. I don't think people think she SHOULD be with him. I think people are just like "DAMNIT. I DON'T WANT TO SHIP IT. BUT JORAH IS SO HOT."

And to be fair, Jorah's creepiness has been downplayed in the show a lot. So it also makes sense that people wouldn't object to Dany/Jorah from a creepiness perspective as much on the show as they would from the books, just based on that alone.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-24 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
me neither, but I can see how fans who now WANT them to get together might be coming across as kind of disregarding Dany's discomfort with his interest in her. But yeah they haven't really shown it so much in the show, so it is kind of a different situation. I tend to forget which details are from the books and which are from the show sometimes, it's hard to keep track. I guess I'm starting to understand how one becomes that annoying fan who brings info from the books into the conversations about the show! But the secret is kind of talking about both, since it's referring to people who ARE familiar with the character already sorta changing their minds. It would be easier if people would treat adaptations as separate fandoms, lol, then people aren't tripping all over each other so much.

Um, maybe there's better examples elsewhere, but most of the complaints on that thread are talking about TV!Jorah's prettied-up behavior, not looks.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-24 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Lol, it's ONTD. They're pretty much all trolls over there 90% of the time anyway.
