Agreed. I always skip past that part when I re-watch the ep...

But then, it seems to me that the idea of the Mind Palace kind of goes against the "getting rid of stuff I don't need on my hard drive". Which is amazing given that Mark Gatiss wrote both the episode where Sherlock says THAT and this one.

I thought the same thing. I mean, he can't be bothered with the solar system but he remembers Elvis lyrics? Really?

Never thought about that, but yeah. That is one massive incongruity.

Elvis lyrics would probably be more likely to be involved with a crime (a code?) than the solar system. I'd say a lot of people relate more to music than astronomy.

Plus, we didn't see when Sherlock actually showed he was oblivious to the workings of the solar system. He might be partially pulling John's leg.

People get lyrics stuck in their heads all the time, even when they're not actually actively listening to the music in question. You're confronted with music all the time whether you want it or not. The solar system, you'd have to learn about on your own.

The way it's shown, it's also something that pops up without him wanting it to, as he waves it away angrily. It doesn't make the scene less silly, but it does make sense.
