I thought it was ridiculous too.

What is happening in this scene? What's with the "Liberty" all over?

Agreed. I always skip past that part when I re-watch the ep...

But then, it seems to me that the idea of the Mind Palace kind of goes against the "getting rid of stuff I don't need on my hard drive". Which is amazing given that Mark Gatiss wrote both the episode where Sherlock says THAT and this one.

It's my undestanding that saying anything to the Sherlock fandom is suicidal, even other shows' season premieres.

I'm kidding (mostly). XD What's this scene about?

i'm just thinking what it looked like to other characters. you know... sherlock just waving his arms around. jerking his head weirdly from side to side. making faces.

it looked stupid for me. imagine for them. they probably thought that he was having a seizure or something.

I find it ironic that all the Sherlock secrets are so godawfully BORING.

This is not the worst one, though.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-24 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE BBC Sherlock but there are quite a few things that I try to skip over because of the cringe worthiness.

This episode has the most of those moments, including Martin Freeman's hammy "IT'S NOT OKAY!!!" 'outburst', Sherlock's multi-chinned breakdown by the fireplace and the whole detoxing scene at the begging. And let's not forget the CG dog.

Yeah, HOTB is probably my least favorite ep but there are moments in the other episodes too.

you are not the only one.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-24 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope, I agree, it was stupid and unnecessary... We *know* he had a mind palace, he didn't need to reenact a blind conductor on speed to show us...

(Anonymous) 2013-02-24 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Same here, OP. I get that Sherlock is supposed to be camp, but quite often it's so camp and ridiculous that I squirm with secondhand embarrassment. I'm not even sure why, it's an automatic reaction.

Slightly OT

(Anonymous) 2013-02-24 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry, but what exactly does "camp" mean? I know the definition, but I don't think I'm confident about what it actually means to be able to look at something and go "oh yeah, that's camp, and it's camp because of _____"

lol, oh God yes. Sometimes I'm surprised that they didn't look at the scene after if was finished and go like "well this is kind of dumb isn't it? maybe we should try something else."

Hahaha I mean it kind of is. You have to be very much in the zone to buy it. First time I was so enthralled, but upon rewatches I do sometimes cringe

From what I understand, saying just about anything to the Sherlock fandom is suicidal. I try to stay away from them because I don't ship John/Sherlock and those are fighting words to them.

I love "Hounds of Baskerville" and this scene because it marks the point where I stopped expecting Sherlock to be a canon update and started thinking of it as trainwrecky ooc fanfic, a cousin in spirit to ff.net fics where everyone attends an American high school. Sherlock has a hard drive and a memory palace, why not? Before "Hounds of Baskerville," it bothered me that familiar names were missing their defining characteristics - Mycroft (fat), Lestrade (ambitious and stubborn), Irene Adler (American) - but now I'm like, oh lol really??? about most of it.

I like the *idea* of it, just sorting through things on kind of auto so that connections can be made that he/you might not otherwise make consciously....

But sometimes, it's a little weird.

I do like that they put the text of texts up on the screen, as someone said above - if they shoot an actual phone, it's often *very* hard to really see what's on there.

[personal profile] funyarinpainahat 2013-02-25 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
I liked it because it was a really great insight into Sherlock's thought process, which oddly enough looks like mine.

But I can see why someone would think it's trying too hard.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-25 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
I feel I could have written this secret myself, especially since I saw this episode only a few days ago and found myself thinking how stupid it was.

And since then I've had trouble with the writers' inability to draw a line between "cold, impersonal intellectual" and "obnoxious douchebag".

I know there are plenty of scenes in which other characters discuss how annoying Sherlock is, but the scene where he shouts "Laterz!" at the Buckingham Palace staff meant that I secretly enjoyed Moriarty tearing him to sheds in the finale.

(I mean seriously, "Laterz"? Somebody knee that man's groin already).

(Anonymous) 2013-02-25 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
Dammit, there was this wonderful video someone posted in the General Comments a few weeks ago with this scene put to Party Rock Anthem or something like that, and it was wonderful.

Apparently I forgot to add it to my favourites, because I can't find it. I'm so disappointed. :(
