I just haven't been all that impressed with his work on Who so far, although that doesn't mean he'd be a crappy showrunner. An example would be The Idiot's Lantern and the whole ''You should totally make up with your abusive dad'' - ending, although so far both New Who showrunners have written extremely problematic stuff, so that would just be more of business-as-usual thing, I suppose. I'm also slightly worried that he'll take over/continue some Moffat plots/characters/pairings I haven't been to pleased with, since him and Moffat are tight.

Oh! I wasn't aware Gatiss had written for Who... heh.

Yeah, that I do agree would suck... [sigh]

Gatiss and Moffat seem pretty close, so if Gatiss were to take over, then I'm afraid it'd just be more of the same.

Gatiss's best work for New Who is "The Unquiet Dead" which is a decent episode. But like... he also wrote "Victory of the Daleks" and "Night Terrors" which are really bad, so... yeah.

I cringe to think of what Doctor Who might be like under him.

Yeah, true...

Yeah, "Unquiet dead" was pretty good, but, yeah, those other two are... not.
Mighty Morphin Power Daleks!

I dunno. See. Night Terrors was a terrible episode plot-wise and writing-wise and directing-wise, but on the other hand, that intro? With the little boy and the cupboard and the little childish mantra reaching halfway across the galaxy? Those kinds of kid-friendly ideas are things I love to see in Doctor Who.

Now, if Gatiss had to actually write lots of big plotty episodes, he would utterly suck. But if he was a different kind of showrunner, one who delegated more work to other writers...I think he could pull it off.

"Victory of the Daleks" was indeed very bad, and I wasn't too fond of the ending of "The Idiot's Lantern", but the rest of the latter episode I actually found pretty good. I haven't seen "Night Terrors", but "The Unquiet Dead" was okay.

Anyway, people were over the moon about Moffat becoming showrunner when it was first announced, because his episodes so far had been absolutely brilliant. RTD's own episodes were really uneven, but I was much happier about the show in general when he was showrunner. I don't think there's a direct correlation between the quality of someone's episodes and how well they perform as showrunner. I'm ... tentatively hopeful, even though it could of course be as bad as you fear.
