she was an animation error that you (general you) turned into a joke about the mentally disabled (And please don't pretend like that is not the reason she took off, regardless of if there was positive done with it) that somehow managed to spiral completely out of control

I guess I just don't understand why you were so attached. Even if you genuinely felt she was somehow "yours" as a community, it's still... a really, really pointless joke that went on too long that was based on an animation error. On a nameless, space-filling extra. Why was that so important?

(Anonymous) 2013-02-24 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Wellllllllllll, she's Ditzy Doo. Derpy was her fan-name. Lauren Faust always had an idea for a BG pegasus pony that would be very clumsy.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-24 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
That in no way addresses what I was saying. I'm aware of the Ditzy Doo name and that Lauren later said that she could be that pony. She took off before Lauren said that though, so I don't really see that as an answer to why people were so attached to this.

My question still stands. Why was a joke about an animation error that important to this fandom?

(Anonymous) 2013-02-25 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
Why is anything important to any fandom? All fandom revolves around things that are not real. It doesn't matter whether something is an "error" or not; all that matters is that it's always completely and utterly imaginary.

Why is it okay to become attached to something make-believe that someone invented on purpose but it's not okay to become attached to something make-believe that someone invented on accident? Either way, the person is still emotionally invested in a non-entity.

I'm not in that fandom, so I can't say for sure, buttttttt...I think there's a certain charm to one-shot characters, or 'blank slate' characters. People don't get attached to the characters solely on their canonical run, but on the fanon that is created around them. Plus, I think her design is nice. Yellow and Gray pop for me, color wise

stares in confusion at the carebears gif

Dark Heart is one of those one-shot characters that people tend to like. It was an example!

(Anonymous) 2013-02-25 02:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know that I'd call him a 'one-shot'- for all that he never appeared in the TV series, he was virtually the star of the film. There's a pretty big difference between that and a background character.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-25 07:44 pm (UTC)(link)
He was the villain of the movie and was never mentioned again (If you don't count Noheart basically being a carbon copy of DH...) He may be a (sort of) fan favorite, but he's nowhere near the 'star' of the movie.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-25 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
I think its because she (Derpy/Ditzy) isnt supposed to exist. Just like how Bronies 'shouldnt' exist either. It's the irony.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-24 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Um lazy eyes =/= mentally disabled. There a like a dozen different characterizations of her and many of the ones I've seen characterize her as a quirky pony sometimes even with a daughter , who may have an eye problem or a speech impediment but still competent. My personal favorite has her very competent but with a speech problem-and a character who keeps going on with determination and strength in spite of her problem.

I'm not fond of the way she was brought in and the lines she was given. and she's not a joke as much as a characterization. I personally agree with Noodly here that maybe it was a poor decision to call attention to her.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-24 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, I'm well aware of the various levels of characterization to Derpy. That all came after her initially taking off because lazy eyes are hilarious, but sure, okay. Let's ignore that part of the argument altogether because it frankly is the least important part to me.

Why was an animation error that important to your fandom that it caused such a meltdown?

That is my entire question. Can you please explain?

(Anonymous) 2013-02-24 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
AYRT

Well I dunno personally I just saw that it made her stand out a little. *shrug* Maybe some people saw it as funny but others saw it as unique, something different.

I think the angry responses were unnecessary and harmful, sort of like "callouts" that are little more than "SHITFUCKING SCUM SLIT YOUR WRISTS AND DIE YOU PIECE OF SHIT" . There was no need to attack people who thought differently but a few people were bothered that she was erased from the show. Personally I would have been cool with just a voice change and maybe changing the lines she spoke.

I honestly wish people hadn't erupted so much but internet seems to bring out the worst in people. When people will get slightly upset over things in real life they seem to rage over things in fandom.

(me, I could have just kept on characterizing her as I always did, a clumsy and quirky, but dedicated mail-pony.) I hope that somewhat answers your question.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-25 07:54 am (UTC)(link)
No, I get you. I'm really only talking about the people who had those angry reactions, so I totally agree with you. I'm being overly general in talking about this and I'm sorry about that. It's just those people that confuse me, I don't understand why this is that important to them.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-25 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
I suppose it never occurred to you that a real person with a real lazy eye might identify with a character that has a lazy eye.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-25 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
THIS. SERIOUSLY.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-25 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
agreed

I hate how the particular anon we were arguing with/answering just assumed we MUST be only interested in mocking Derpy. We can't actually find her an interesting and unique character, no.

But then again how do we expect not to have bias from someone who states from the get go that they just hate the fandom in general. It seems like this person just wants to prove the worst.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-25 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
Hey um you've been coming off rather angry , and honestly you come across as if you're looking for something negative with your "well it doesn't matter if anything positive was made of the character she was just intended to be laughed at an it's wrong."

Some of us like her not because we think she's hilarious or pathetic , but we actually like a character that has something unique about them. While I love the mane 6 their personalities are all based on common "types" of female characters. The smart girl, the brash tomboy, the hyper Genki girl, the shy girl, the drama queen /fashionista, and the country girl. But Derpy is something entirely unique. She's can be any mix of two main pony's personality types, or she she can be something the author thinks up. A dedicated but forgetful/clumsy girl or a quirky girl with her head in the clouds.

That's why the fandom likes her. Some people can identify with her lazy eyes and the feeling of dealing with being different and they can write her with those experiences in mind. Then , some people with experiences and personality unlike that of the main characters can. They can have a character they identify with.

I don't see how that's wrong at all. I do agree that they should have kept her in the sidelines and I don't agree with how her removal was dealt with but still, you seem to be very angry that people like this character.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-25 08:35 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not angry, I'm just really bad at being serious without sounding mad. Sorry.

I've been really general in my addressing of the fandom here, and I'm sorry. If you like her but you think she should have been kept in the background, then you're not who I'm talking about. Do whatever you like, you're great! I only brought it up because I felt like it would come up as an excuse and I'm saying that's, in my experience, a by-product of her blowing up in popularity and not WHY she became popular. It's certainly not what ended up in the show.

I'm really just... mystified about the people who were happy with the original version of her speaking role, and then completely lost it when there was backlash over it and it had to be changed. I really don't understand it, because in the end this is not about a positive representation getting erased, it's about a background character that blew up into something that really shouldn't have happened in the first place. It just really confuses me that these people found this depiction of her important enough to cause so much grief, especially because she really just was an animation error to begin with.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-25 07:47 pm (UTC)(link)
lol@you trying so very hard to shoehorn your "Oh my gawd, no one can really like her for any other reason than because she's handicapped!" theory into every reply here. You're trying way too hard bb
