I was kind of annoyed by this video too, mainly because of the comments on how Mattie should have been Anti-Death-Penalty and non-violent.

Me? I'm against the death penalty and anti-violence but even I know that given Mattie's time and circumstances, standing around fretting over the ethics of hanging the dick that MURDERED HER DAD would have been both out-of-place and OOC.

Being a strong character means being portrayed as a human individual, not as an idea, even if the idea is Perfect Feminist Character

"How Not To Write A Novel" has things to say about this.

There's a fair bit of emotional and political subtext behind Mattie's desire to have Cheney tried in Fort Smith, Arkansas as opposed to Texas. In Mattie's mind, Fort Smith owes her family a debt of justice, and by bringing Cheney to trial, she hopes to force the issue.

But Portis isn't shy about having Mattie reveal her own flaws and biases.
