THIS JUST IN: A LOT OF STRONG WOMEN ARE ALSO TRADITIONALLY 'MASCULINE' IN OTHER WAYS AND THIS DOES NOT MAKE THEM ANY LESS FEMALE NOR LESS APT ROLE MODELS FOR YOUNG WOMEN NOR IS THEIR VERY EXISTENCE A CRITICISM OF STRONG WOMEN WHO ARE 'FEMININE'.
MORE AT ELEVEN.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-24 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)I mean, yes, there is a weird prevalence in fiction that female characters that are deemed strong usually display stereotypically masculine characteristics, but that doesn't mean they aren't feminist or can't count as feminist depictions. The idea that feminine = weak and masculine = strong needs to die, but women that are considered more 'masculine' by society aren't often displayed positively to begin with. Basically there needs to be a better representation of women within films as a whole, with women with stereotypically feminine attributes still being allowed to be strong, fully-fledged characters, and women with stereotypically masculine attributes also shown as human beings. And also, shock-horror, women can also embody traits seen as masculine and feminine. It's not a zero-sum game.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-24 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)Me? I'm against the death penalty and anti-violence but even I know that given Mattie's time and circumstances, standing around fretting over the ethics of hanging the dick that MURDERED HER DAD would have been both out-of-place and OOC.
Being a strong character means being portrayed as a human individual, not as an idea, even if the idea is Perfect Feminist Character

Edit: I also dislike how she apparently thinks feminism=pacifism and nonpacifism=immediate misogyny.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-24 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)Back in the early days of BSG, there was a complaint along these lines about Starbuck. The writer called her a "boy with boobs" (and whined about things like her first appearing in masculine clothing. Keep in mind that, in her first appearance, she is wearing the exact same standard issue military clothing that every single other person stationed on Galactica, be it male or female, is wearing. I was like, "what, did you want her to randomly appear in stereotypical feminine civvies just to prove that she's a girl?"), which offended the absolute fuck out of me, because I've met women like her (a lot of military women are like Starbuck! Who woulda thunk?), so it was like...what? They aren't "woman" enough for you? You're sitting there complaining about how sexist men tend to be, but then you're turning around and acting like the Supreme Arbiter of What Makes a Female? She also lambasted the fact that Starbuck didn't immediately jump into the sack with Apollo in the miniseries, declaring that this proved that she was supposed to be viewed as virginal, and even made fun of the idea that someone would be reticent about sleeping with his/her dead fiance's sibling. Because yeah, if you think you're responsible for the death of the man you were going to marry, and the guy you're suddenly attracted to is his brother (and who therefore would have been YOUR brother), then feeling weird about sleeping with him TOTALLY MEANS THAT YOU'RE VIRGINAL AND NEVER SLEEP WITH ANYONE EVER. Not to mention: when the fuck would they have slept together during the miniseries? "Oh, yeah, we're being attacked by Cylons, but in order to prove that I am an empowered woman, we need to go over here and waste some time fucking."
Phew.
Yeah.
I've been angry about that a long time. :-/

I don't wish her ill, and I think she could be very informative if she stuck to things she knew well.

Certainly that's not the model of second- and third-wave feminism, but it certainly isn't what I call "masculine" either. A central theme of True Grit is that Mattie and Cogburn are both products of their time and sit uneasily in it. Cogburn is a moral monster, a terrorist of Bloody Kansas who becomes a Federal Marshal primarily by virtue of American indifference to "Indiana Territory," who has a short career as a hired thug in a range war before becoming a sideshow freak.
Mattie, in contrast is a woman ahead of her time. She successfully takes over her family's business, and earns a reputation as an old maid and opinionated woman. Her culture and time doesn't know how to deal with women who do that who are not wives.
Saying that either the Coens or Portis are engaged in a celebration of masculinity ignores the fact that the central male character of both movie and novel is a deeply disturbed and amoral anti-hero.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-25 12:34 am (UTC)(link)i haven't seen true grit, but speaking generally: i understand where she's coming from a bit (shoving traditionally masculine traits onto women shouldn't be viewed as the magic key to making "strong female characters," and femininity isn't weak), but it felt like she was saying female characters "should" act in a kind of specific way in order to be feminist, and if they have x y and z traits then they're "essentially men" or something. nevermind the fact that there's plenty of women in real life who exhibit those traits? are they lesser women, now?
(also, am i the only one who feels a little weird asking if a character is "feminist or not," because i can't quite place a finger on why)
