(Anonymous) 2013-02-24 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)Back in the early days of BSG, there was a complaint along these lines about Starbuck. The writer called her a "boy with boobs" (and whined about things like her first appearing in masculine clothing. Keep in mind that, in her first appearance, she is wearing the exact same standard issue military clothing that every single other person stationed on Galactica, be it male or female, is wearing. I was like, "what, did you want her to randomly appear in stereotypical feminine civvies just to prove that she's a girl?"), which offended the absolute fuck out of me, because I've met women like her (a lot of military women are like Starbuck! Who woulda thunk?), so it was like...what? They aren't "woman" enough for you? You're sitting there complaining about how sexist men tend to be, but then you're turning around and acting like the Supreme Arbiter of What Makes a Female? She also lambasted the fact that Starbuck didn't immediately jump into the sack with Apollo in the miniseries, declaring that this proved that she was supposed to be viewed as virginal, and even made fun of the idea that someone would be reticent about sleeping with his/her dead fiance's sibling. Because yeah, if you think you're responsible for the death of the man you were going to marry, and the guy you're suddenly attracted to is his brother (and who therefore would have been YOUR brother), then feeling weird about sleeping with him TOTALLY MEANS THAT YOU'RE VIRGINAL AND NEVER SLEEP WITH ANYONE EVER. Not to mention: when the fuck would they have slept together during the miniseries? "Oh, yeah, we're being attacked by Cylons, but in order to prove that I am an empowered woman, we need to go over here and waste some time fucking."
Phew.
Yeah.
I've been angry about that a long time. :-/

(Anonymous) 2013-02-25 04:25 am (UTC)(link)I get sick and tired of those who whine that not fucking freely is not normal. Some of us don't feel like having sex all the time and want to have it with whom we chose. And so what if someone never has sex? Whose business is this anyways? Anyone who thinks women need to fuck to be free needs to be severely criticized for dictating to women what they need to be doing. We've been told enough of this shit by the patriarchy, thank you very much.
What the hell is virginal anyways? Why does anyone even care about it? Why does a woman have to fuck a particular man to prove she isn't virginal?
Yeah, I completely and totally judge anyone who thinks women need to be fucking and clutches their pearls at what they think is prudery.
To have sex or to not have sex, and with whom, is totally a woman's choice, to not be shamed by anyone!
