Years ago a RL friend gave me her fan fic to read. It was dreadful, all sorts of bad sex like this. I didn't know what to say. Sometime later, at a relatively informal writers gathering (a group of us that live in the same city and would sometimes get together for dinner) she told me she was trying to embrace the Mary Sue trope, that's why her OC was named Mary Sue and had red hair/improbable eyes/etc. And I said "OH! So the sex was supposed to be parody bad! Now I get it! You should play up here, here, and here, to make sure the reader 'gets' that the sex is supposed to be laughably bad, rather than hot."

She gets really quiet for a minute, and says "The sex parts weren't supposed to be bad or parody." ... And she quit writing for almost a decade.

We're still very good friends. I appologized for that again recently (she was telling me that she'd recently started dabbling again), and she told me that while it stung, but she did need the reality check.
