It's all dicks and assholes everywhere, so here, have some more wank to lube things up
At the micro-social example, the best analogy would be people who were abused as kids growing up and turning into abusers themselves.
At the macro-social level, you do see instances of Israelis enacting the same discriminatory policies that the Nazis had, the ones that eventually culminated in the Holocaust. Meanwhile, the fact that Palestinians are being frequently hurt by Israeli abuse hasn't made them any less bigoted towards certain people within or around their own communities, such as LGBT Palestinians.
Somewhere in the middle of all those two levels, you can probably find a sorta-meta example within comics and sci-fi as a genre. A lot of the original creators and big names of comics and sci-fi were the geeky guys who were used to being picked on in daily life due to not conforming to our militaristic and patriarchal culture. You'd expect these guys to be more accepting of women, another large group frequently put down by the patriarchy, right? Wrong! There are few, if any, genres more sexist and misogynistic than sci-fi - those original geeky guys, rather than embracing an ally, turned around and started oppressing the only group they could in the only medium they could, women in comics and sci-fi. Even now that most sci-fi and comics guys are probably not nearly as bullied or picked on as their predecessors were, it's a standard that still permeates fandoms today (see the "Fake Geek Girls" bullshit, and some guys' reactions to the Hawkeye Initiative).
Meanwhile, take a look at some of the people involved in the nastier depths of SJW. "Oppression Olympics", while admittedly dismissive and derogatory in its typical use, is not a wholly inaccurate obersvation of fandom, either, because you will get people who want to play the "who's oppressed more game" - and thanks to the multi-generational and multi-national nature of the Internet, there will never be a "right" answer, if it were ever even possible to come to a "right" answer within one single age-and-place community in the first place. Even here and now, you'll find the kind of people who are arguing this very issue turn around and put someone down for, effectively, not being from the same time and place as them, using indirect means of "attack" such as quibbles of terminology (an insult in one place is an endearment in another, a pejorative to one generation is a neutral term to the next one, etc), or claiming that being X minority gives them some form of priority or credence over Y minority.
tl;dr - there are assholes in any given group of people; the fact that someone was a dick to you is just as likely to result in you turning around and deciding to be a dick to someone/anyone/everyone else, as it is to make you decide to be a protector against all other dicks and make sure no one else ever has to go through what you did. This happens all the time in levels of human history and society. It's a sad fact of life, but it's true, and honestly, the contrary nature of Magneto's character (comic-standard inconsistencies aside) is probably a terrifyingly accurate depiction of human psychology within a cycle of abuse.
