Besides, by that logic, it would be insulting to straight people for these folks to claim that they're straight if they're really gay/bi. omg. someone think of the straights.
YEAH, I'M RLY RLY INSULTED BY YOU CLAIMING TO BE BI DESPITE THE FACT THAT YOU'VE NEVER KISSED A GIRL OMG /angry lesbian rant ohwait I can't really be a lesbian... DAMMIT NOW I'M CONFUSED.

Really, this whole idea that you have to do something physical with a member of the same sex to prove to yourself that you like them... heteronormative much? What is it that's "insulting to gays," again?

I repeat I find it insulting, and again, it's because it makes gay people lose a ton of credibility. It certianly is not because of the kiss thing, it's because most of those people really aren't gay at all, they really just want to get the spotlight.
Most of them are drama queens, emo, suddendly dark etc etc, not to mention the fact that until the day before all of their friends became suddendly gay, they were perfectly stright.
Oh, and I don't talk of sterothypes, really. It's in italian, but I can link you at least 10 blogs of people like that (then you can just watch their friends pages since it's basically the same thing), and if I talk like this, it's because I've seen such things happen.
Please do read my first comment (and this one, of course), and let me know if you didn't get something, if I explained myself badly or your opinion in general (I do value it)!

I'm sorry if I offended anyone or you in particular, I didn't mean that.
It's just as you said, by the way. You knew since you was 12. It's not like you suddendly realized when there casually was a tendency amongst all of your goth-emo-dark friends to be omglesbian.
Please do let me know your opinion/if I wasn't clear in what I meant, so I can explain it better!

But honestly, I do think it's offending, because it really is not a matter of sexuality, but it's just a matter of wanting to be popular/alternative at all cost (which actually is the very same thing). I've explained the exact situation in my comment, if I was not clear (possible) please to let me know what you didn't get/your opinions, so I can explain myself better.
