If I understand, you're saying she doesn't dress very flatteringly for her body type, and you don't like it because you feel she's being aggressive about it? She can dress however she feels, can't she? What's the point of someone else mentioning her weight?

I mean, basically every show that has a larger woman on it dresses her as flatteringly as possible anyway, so there's not really a bad stereotype of fat girls dressing poorly on TV.

Not that I've seen this show.

I want to know what was going through her mind when she picked that outfit on the right. Like, THAT'S how you chose to represent yourself to the world? That? Really? Seriously?

(Anonymous) 2013-02-26 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, that... jumpsuit thing isn't flattering. Especially the way the legs have wrinkled up, and the shoes and socks either don't look good with it or they don't look good on her.

Unfortunate, because I would like to see some examples of clothing and fashion that looks GOOD on overweight people, but it's rare to see overweight people in fiction at all, so I can't really find many examples of it.

Frankly, that jumpsuit never should have been made or worn by anyone. It's soooo unflattering in the crotch; the seam creates insta-camel-toe.

Better things are actually found on plus size models: http://plus-model-mag.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/plus-size-models-852777722.jpg

A lot of thin celebrities wear dumpy t-shirts, but we fat girls have to up our game.

Is the pic on the right from the show as well?

I'm guessing they're just trying for the "lol so awkward and unstylish" look and, yeah, going a bit far sometimes.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-26 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
oh god cellulite. what on earth makes somebody think that anybody else wants to see that?

(Anonymous) 2013-02-26 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
ikr? those fatties should just wear floor length sacks over their heads so nobody has to be offended by them

Skinny people get cellulite too

It's possible to be large and have a higher muscle-to-fat ration than skinnier people

There are plenty of skinny people walking around in a skimpy outfits who have flabby arms and such that I personally don't want to see but hey it's their choice, I'm not going to hate on them for it (and sometimes it's hot outside so I can't fault people for wearing less clothing anyway)

I think it's part of the whole character, that she's trying to figure out how to be a grown up (and kinda sucking at it), and that includes figuring out how to dress herself (and also sucking at it).
ext_81845: penelope, my art/character (Default)

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2013-02-26 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
What is wrong with her appearance? Please elaborate. Is it because she dares to show skin despite being slightly overweight? I think it's kinda cool that she's been showing off more of her body this season even though she's obviously gained weight, it seems like a "fuck you" to all the fatphobes out there

Also, I think some of the sillier fashion choices are supposed to be a joke (like the "power clashing" and those awful onesies and stuff -- that would look bad on anyone, I think that's kind of the point). Also that one character with the stupid fake Native American shit and the headbands -- this show is basically making fun of the whole hipster subculture

(Anonymous) 2013-02-26 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
by 'looking cute irl' you don't mean the picture on the right...right? because that jumpsuit+socks+those shoes would look stupid on anyone.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-26 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
You'll get a lot of backlash from the internet fat acceptance movement for this, but yes, IRL people generally don't find cellulite or fat attractive and I think we all know this. The thing is that the outfit would look awful on anyone, size 2 or 22 or 42. That print is awful and the cut makes it look like a Walmart reject. The sock combo... that's just unfortunate.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-26 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
I'm with you, OP. It is entirely possible to dress your body in a flattering manner and show some skin while being a little overweight. Lena is not doing this. (I point everyone to What Not to Wear reruns on YouTube...)

The picture on the right I think is actually very cute. The one on the left it's hard to tell because of the lighting and how crowded it is

Has the new season started up? I need to find episodes!! That show is such a train wreck!! I hate everyone on it!! Yet I want to continue watching it.

though I agree. Many of her clothing choices make me, a non fashion person, cringe. They don't flatter her at all.

I 100% agree that they purposefully style Hanna in an unflattering -- and also often inappropriate for the situation -- way. My problem is I don't get WHY. I don't think it's (primarily) about Lena Dunham making a point about what's considered attractive. Her getting naked so often is about that, but I'm pretty sure the styling is supposed to say something about the character,

But I ... don't know what. Hanna is out of touch and doesn't know how to dress in a flattering way (or an appropriate way for, like, work or job interviews)? That she doesn't care? If so, why not? Is HANNA trying to flaunt convention?

As is often the case with Girls, I feel like there's interesting thoughts going into the show, but the point is lost in translation.

[personal profile] agnes_bean 2013-02-26 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
If it makes you feel any better, I don't think she can ever get worse than that thing she wore at the beginning of "One Man's Trash." That was a crime against fashion that wouldn't have looked good on anyone.

There are plenty of male comedians who dress weird, or downright ugly, for comic effect. Funny on the inside, funny on the outside. It's a generally accepted practice.

When women do it? Outrageous.

i'm sorry, this had to be said. i think healthy girls can be any size that makes them feel good and can dress any way that makes them feel good, too. but at some point, these clothes have to feel unflattering and uncomfortable. so why are her choices so perpetually and agressively unflattering? what is she trying to say?
thank you, op!! i feel like someone just scratched my back in between the shoulder blades while i was holding a big stack of library books.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-26 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
It seems that everyone's focused on weight, non-flattering clothing for her shape, etc. Um... basically, her face just isn't that great... all on it's own. Yes, I know, how dare I, what a "Mean Girl" thing to say, blah-blah-blah. I'll "DARE" to mention, she just 'ain't cute'.
