There are plenty of male comedians who dress weird, or downright ugly, for comic effect. Funny on the inside, funny on the outside. It's a generally accepted practice.

When women do it? Outrageous.

Basically, this.

Also don't forget that it's okay for male comedians to play characters that are immature and childish man-children who don't know how to function as real adults but when women do the same thing they're criticized for it, usually by feminists who complain about infantilization of women and so forth

Basically, every time anyone criticized Lena Dunham or Girls it makes me like the show even more, even though Lena Dunham seems pretty self-absorbed and like someone I would normally dislike (but not for the reasons everyone on the internet is foaming at the mouth about her)

If a woman dressed that way for comedic effect? I'd be totally down with that. I don't like men dressed poorly (and I don't mean casually, I mean the complete lack of taste and sense of flattering ones body) any more than I like women dressed poorly - there's just only so much of a range in men's clothing on which they can screw up.

I've never watched the show, but I got the impression from the way she talks about it that it's supposed to be relatable to women in general. So I'm assuming it's not meant for comedy purposes? I don't know.

Interesting I don't think this applies to my country. There are three female comedians that jumped to my mind who are fat and dress weird/unflattering, have made that their trademark and play with it, while I can think of only one male comedian with that combination. Nobody's "outraged" by them. (Well, they may have been by one of them when she started out 20/30 years ago, but she's also a lesbian and loud with a very grating voice...)

And there's plenty of fat-shaming and judging women because of their outfit in our society otherwise.

You wouldn't happen to be German, would you? ;)

How did you guess? ;-)

While I definitely think there are double standards in comedy and Lena bears the brunt of some of them, Girls is a generally realist dramedy, not an exaggerated fantasy-land comedy. Maybe the point of dressing Hanna that way is to make people laugh, but if that's the case it doesn't reallyread that way, IMO.
