I do this too! I use Calibre to download fic from FFnet or ao3 (despite ao3's own fic packaging service). There are some that I download that I have no intention of reading in the forseeable future. There are long 600k word monsters that maybe someday I will be in the mood to tackle. I read a lot of fic from the Merlin fandom and I'm worried about places like Box of Magic because I don't know how to save fic from there, but I need it. A lot of it isn't hosted anywhere else. I am itching to get epubs of some of those works. I'd be so sad if I never got a copy of Accidental Memory in The Case of Death.

I've been using Calibre for a while now but only recently discovered the amazing add-ons that make downloading fanfic so incredibly easy. They also make grabbing updates a simple click of a button rather than visiting the site itself and copy-paste it in. Means that taking fic on the go with my reader, instead of carrying around my tablet and using Pocket, is lighter and for archival purposes it can't be beat.

Still do love a simple-format doc file though.

For OP: some people have problems with it (or so I've heard) but if they're willing to put their work on the Internet freely and willingly then they need to also understand the "risks" they are undertaking. Nothing on the Internet truly dies.

I just got an ereader and discovered calibre and I've archiving fic like crazy. I had no idea about the update app, though.

Do you know if it allows you to retain notes and highlights from before the updated document? Kindle doesn't allow you to save notes and highlights, so it would be pretty cool not to have to copy and paste for updates and lose the previous notes.

This plugin downloads and updates fics when used. I'm not sure how I could read fanfic anymore without having this. If you use the plugin, place an icon on the toolbar, then you can use that button to automatically download any updates to the highlight fic (with a URL that works, ie Fanfiction.net or A03). Fantastic tool.

I can't comment on highlight though. My ereader is an old one, a Sony 300-something, but is a solid thing. You'd probably have to check the documentation for that.

*looks at config* Wow, this plugin does a lot more than I thought, including taking fics from more sites than I imagined. There's a reason open-source applications are amazing. :)

Did you notice it can now take the URL of a series page on AO3 and make anthology books? It's awesome since you can update the anthology just like you can a standalone story, it will get new chapters on the WIPs and also add in new stories in the series.

Apparently you can also manually give it URLs to make an anthology with, so you could also do that with other sites, it just won't automatically get the new stories, you'd have to add their URLs manually.

Ah, Accidental Memory! Superb fic! Definitely worth a save.

There's also FLAG! Downloading a 650,000 word epic long Zelda novel in about four seconds? Best thing ever.
