I...don't really see what the big deal is? It seems like it's a good idea if you really enjoy a piece. I mean, even if the extreme worst case scenarios never happen, there are writers who ultimately take down their fic.

I dunno, I just say "go for it."

You are really not the only one. Harry Potter fandom at least has entire communities dedicated to retrieving fic of authors who deleted, so they'd have that for if anything went down, too.

I think a lot of people do that, OP! I know I do (though sadly there's a couple of fics that I failed to back up, that are now gone from the internet).

(Anonymous) 2013-02-26 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
I don't get it. Saving fic that you like/want to re-read isn't weird or odd. I have a bunch of folders with various fic and file types - some transferred to Word, some saved as offline webpages, some downloaded through squee!Book.

Unless I'm just missing something here, you're totally over thinking this. It's not a big deal.

I do it too, though I usually save the webpage or pdfs. I don't have a regular internet access and I like having access to fics I like reading without needing to rely on an internet connection.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-26 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
I've been saving my favourite fanfics on my computer for about a decade now for the same reason. I have hundreds, from many different fandoms, over the years. I always add the link to the original source of the fic so I can re-visit the actual page to read it if I can, but still feel secure knowing that I still have a backup copy in case I can't access the original source anymore.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-26 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
I've got 10+ years of fanfic reading saved in txt format, sorted by fandoms and pairings. The 'fic folder has followed me through some four or five different computers and two external hard drives. I seriously do not want to look up the total number of files in it.

What's strange about this? I save a file of all fics that I've liked just because I could always somehow delete my bookmarks by accident.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-26 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
I do that, too.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-26 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
I do this too! I use Calibre to download fic from FFnet or ao3 (despite ao3's own fic packaging service). There are some that I download that I have no intention of reading in the forseeable future. There are long 600k word monsters that maybe someday I will be in the mood to tackle. I read a lot of fic from the Merlin fandom and I'm worried about places like Box of Magic because I don't know how to save fic from there, but I need it. A lot of it isn't hosted anywhere else. I am itching to get epubs of some of those works. I'd be so sad if I never got a copy of Accidental Memory in The Case of Death.

I have this fear of something happening to a website without notice as well. It used to be a very unhealthy fear back in the Piczo days.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-26 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
Hell, AO3 has options to download fic built right in.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-26 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
I do the same thing. I've seen far too many sites die, people lose interest, people take all their stuff down... I've even edited a few in my personal collection for word choice and grammar.

I'm sure some apoplectic fanbrat would pitch a fit if she knew, but as long as you're not reposting them or other distributing them, there's no harm done.

Are you attempting a novel-length secret there, OP?

Concise version: I save my favorite fic to a word doc because I'm afraid of its inevitably disappearance from the 'net.

That's all you needed to say.

I don't typically do this simply because I'm lazy, but I have been tempted. There's nothing unusual about that at all. (Why wouldn't you want a copy of your favorite stories?) Some of my favorite fanfics have been deleted and I WISH I had copies.

Seems like a good plan to me. One of my favorite fanfiction sites just went *poof* and disappeared from the internets forever quite recently, and I'm still kicking myself for not thinking of that.

Yeah, like everyone else is saying, it's not really that weird. I've only done it with a few fics but there are a lot more I need to save. I have definite favorites where I'd be really sad if they were taken down for some reason and I wasn't able to go back and reread them.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-26 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
Why is this a secret or weird? AO3 has a download button. Copy and paste to a word doc, or save the page as a file. Does not require thought, or an entire secret.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-26 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
If you want to keep all the web/layout/fan extranea of the online version, you could always just save the fic as a .htm file.

I. This is cool.
Recently I went to the tags section of my fandom, and there were these tags for non-existent stories (the ones that were deleted, that is)... it broke my heart. Although, judging by the tags, the majority of them were utter crap (characters' names misspelt and lacking capitals, say), I... still feel bad.

II. This can be disturbing, if the author wants their fic removed. Granted, they're not entitled to having it deleted from everywhere, but I personally had this experience with coming back to my fanfic, seeing that it's hilariously bad and ending up deleting it. I would be seriously worried if somebody would remain in possession of the text anyway.
Sure, you can switch accounts or ask your former fans to treat this story as anonymously written; IDK. I see how it can feel funny.

I did this with someone's fics in the kuroshitsuji fandom who was a bnf and then migrated to spn. At first I though I was being dumb because it was bnf fic and I thought it wouldn't be deleted and it'd be recc'd for a long time and that saving it out of paranoia was pointless. It turns out that they went back and deleted all their old anime fandom fics so now I feel really lucky that I had saved their fic and art.

I actually wish I did this more often, OP. I mean, I have tons of pieces that I love to go back and reread over and over again, but I've only saved about four of them to my computer. And I also worry about "what if they get taken down?" So...yeah, I really wish I did this more often.

I say go for it, as long as you don't re-post it anywhere. Nothing wrong with being able to read it offline.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-26 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
I get the random sense of embarrasment. That you might look back - or, (IMO, worse) that someone else will see the list. A lot of what I like is "cute" but certainly not "good."
