Dear OP,

I know what you mean about downloading/backing up files and feeling weird about it. I've been in fandom a long time (nearly 20 years at this point) and I don't see it often anymore but I used to see all the time fanfics with a "don't save/don't archive" message on them. I don't see it anymore, but it used to be a thing, along with disclaimers about the rights to the subject matter. After the first few things I read were pulled off the internet or lost in yahoo groups mailing lists I started saving things. It's on a flashdrive now- 1.3 gigs total. Anyway, I know the feel. There's still friends of mine who ask why you'd want to save fanfic/read it again, and there was some hostility to the idea at a panel at a con I was at a year ago. I say save stuff anyway.
