Don't take "The Blind Banker" and "A Scandal in Belgravia" too seriously - they're both rather problematic, and everybody (except apparently Moffat) knows it, so just accept that. They're not terrible stories otherwise, but they will make you want to beat your head against a wall.

How is "A Scandal in Belgravia" problematic? I just watched it for the first time a week ago and didn't see anything horrible about it. What am I missing?

nayrt (and major "Scandal in Belgravia" spoilers here obv)

I think it is both problematic and bad (although I generally have a lower opinion of Sherlock than some people do so take that in mind). To me, it's problematic because it takes a fairly strong character from the original works (Irene Adler) and makes two crucial changes to her character. First, it makes it so that her power comes largely or even primarily from her sexuality. Second, it completely reverses the dynamic of the original story - the point of which was that Adler outsmarted Holmes. She won. Whereas in this version, not only does Sherlock totally beat Adler (& does so at least in part because of her weird obsessive crush on him), she also later needs him to dash in on a white horse and save her life, or whatever. Which, one, is much worse than the dynamic of the original story - but it has to be said that Moffat took a story where a smart, intelligent woman beat Sherlock Holmes at his own game, and turned it into a story where a sexy dominatrix is obsessed with Holmes, is beaten by him, and then has her life saved by him.

Also, it's bad - both in relation to the original story, and on its own terms (there's so many plot twists that the story quickly becomes ludicrous, even before the completely absurd SHERLOCKED thing). But yeah, I definitely see why people think it's problematic.

Ah, I see. I never read the original story, so I had nothing to compare it to. My impression of Irene in BBC's Sherlock wasn't that all her power came from her sexuality, she had used her wits and resourcefulness to gain enough power that she could do whatever the fuck she wanted. I thought she was a fun character for the first half of the episode.

The SHERlocked thing was absolutely ridiculous, though. She's this woman with the power to topple dynasties and she's brought down by a schoolgirl crush? Bullshit.

agreed on this, especially on the point that it is bad. it's really, really bad on its own, never mind canon. the whole episode made no sense and i actually felt like sherlock was pretty epically OOC. my brothers (who've never even read any acd) were baffled by it and spent a couple of hours after the ep just trying to sort out wtf happened and how ridiculous it was.

I found it incredibly silly, that's all. The scene with Sherlock saving Irene was a stuff of fairy tales.

Besides, in Sherlock the Irene/Sherlock "canonical" pairing disturbs me no less than in Elementary.

I don't care if it's problematic, it's just badly done plotwise.

The scene with him saving her disguised as one of the Evil Arabs felt like a scene from a cheesy pulp movie from the 50s, not a modern Sherlock Holmes adaptation.

ugh seriously I want to erase that episode from existence.
