It just means you're a fan. Watch the show, maybe collect a figure or two, and that's it. No need to feel like you're associated with that fuck stain, neckbeard group.

Like the show for what it is and stay away from the Bronies.

And anyone who tries to tell you Bronies "aren't all that bad!!!/we're not all like that!!" stay the hell away from them.

You do realize that a lot of people use brony without knowing its connotations, right?
otakugal15: (Default)

[personal profile] otakugal15 2013-02-26 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
Um, I call bullshit on that. Because you'd have to know SOMETHING of the connotations or contexts to even KNOW what "Brony" is.

DA

I think what they mean is, some people see it as nothing more than a nickname for MLP fans, like "Potterheads" or "Twihards" or whatever. They don't know about the bad sides of it because they don't hang out in those places.

Me and my brother used the term until we learned about some of the unsavory stuff in the fandom and decided to change our mind. My little sister knows an elementary school boy who calls himself a brony because he's a bo, who's an MLP fan . Would you call a nine/ten/eleven-year old a "shit-stain" because they used the term?

I'd hope not. Because that would be hopelessly gross.

I wouldn't call the kid that because a kid that young wouldn't know all that, but their parent or older sibling? Yep. Cause that's probably where they got it from. Especially if they actively use that name. Means they are aware of the shitty fandom, but don't give a damn.

You guys gave a damn and changed. Which is awesome.

honest to god, it's just a word. I'm not actively involved in MLP fandom (used to watch and poke around some art/fics but don't any more) but it's a catchy term to identify fans. there will be people who call themselves bronies who are great. there will be people who like MLP and don't ID as bronies who are horrible. one word doesn't actually tell you these things about a person.

Yeah I think it's completely messed up to make a claim that if you use a word a gross person used then you're morally the same as said gross person.

Ex: Shippers. There are some shippers who have done some awfully sick or sketchy things in their fics and think it's okay. So if you call yourself a shipper , you are now a horrible human being.

fan: But I just peacefully ship HarryxHermione on the si-

Ex: IT DOESN'T FUCKING MATTER YOU'RE A SICK DISGRACE AND SHOULD BE ASHAMED! Get lost scum!

fan: T.T *hangs head and walks away*

....Yeaaaah how much sense does that make?

(Anonymous) 2013-02-26 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
Considering she doesn't even realize it's not capitalized, that may be giving her way too much credit. XD

Nope.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-26 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
The hell are you babbling about? Some Bronies capitalize, some don't.
diet_poison: (Default)

[personal profile] diet_poison 2013-02-26 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
I've never seen it capitalized but then I don't spend any time around internet bronies except when someone sends me a link about one of the nasty things they've done

(Anonymous) 2013-02-26 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
Just when I thought internet subculture couldn't get any stupider... people start trying to make "brony" into a proper noun.

Man. At least y'all are good for a laugh.

[personal profile] diet_poison 2013-02-26 01:15 pm (UTC)(link)
To be fair I think it's just a grammar issue. Some people capitalize lots of random nouns, especially those pertaining to groups of people or a particular subject of interest.

It bugs me for that reason, lol. I'm a bit anal about grammar.

How about someone who says "THEY're not all like that?" I barely qualify as a member of this fandom, and I wouldn't call myself a "brony", but the girl who got me into it uses the term "brony" to refer to herself, and I refuse to stand for insults to her character.

It's a fandom. Fandoms do horrible things. Dig through years of Fandom Wank, and I'm sure you could find all sorts of terrible things the Scoobies did, and at least one terrible thing the Browncoats did (though they were smaller, though I'm sure they did less.) If horrible things invalidate one fandom, they invalidate fandom itself.

Which, to be fair, is an argument some folks would be willing to make . . .

NA

(Anonymous) 2013-02-26 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
So uh let me get this straight. When someone or some group who uses a term to refer to themselves does something bad that word is now tainted forever for anybody else?

Let's go attack people who proudly identify as British because hey the British did some fucked up things in the Revolution. You Muslim? Whoops too bad Muslims did bad stuff can't call yourself that anymore. Oh and Catholics don't get me started just...pick a new name. Hey SJ folks? You identify with a group that advocates suicide, harasses and stalks people and puts personal information online? Scum... no excuses SCUM!!

and I refuse to refer to myself as a member of fandom. Y'all better do the same. Or else....I think ill of you...over the internet. OOOoooOOooOoOOo

Dude seriously, it's a word. Bro+pony. Not Browomanhater. I don't get why in the year 2013 when fandom has been going on since the 70s or earlier and we're still doing this

Some of those Trekkies did some fucked up stuff to at some point. Got any Trekkies here? FOR SHAME.

I love this comment, a lot.

Good luck getting through though. Otaku has a real hateboner for anyone referring to themselves as a "brony", with no regard whatsoever for their actual character, or the fact that it's a label like any other label that has both good and bad people representing it.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-26 11:04 am (UTC)(link)
Ok, let me ask you an age old question:

Are you a feminist? Do you call yourself a feminist? What do you think of the people who don't like to call themselves a feminist because they don't want to lumped in with the bat-shit insane, man hating feminists?

(Anonymous) 2013-02-27 06:34 am (UTC)(link)
You are seriously equating a 4chan nickname to an equal rights movement??

(Anonymous) 2013-02-27 09:26 am (UTC)(link)
No, I'm just talking about labels and names.

I'm asking if the horrendous actions and opinions expressed under one banner should be held to everyone under that banner.

Specifically, I want to know what otaku thinks about that.
