Uhhhh lots of marijuana use in my family and my parents used in front of us but I still don't think it's wrong or any less normal than someone drinking a beer, they would do it when I was supposed to be asleep anyway on the weekend when they had friends over to play D&D and such. As far as the community goes, I grew up in a fairly urban area so drug use was not too uncommon but nobody acted like it was normal, outside of marijuana use

Lots of physical and verbal abuse going on in my family so that was definitely the norm, but it wasn't considered "ok" in my community, nor the carrying of weapons unless concealed (and the whole thing about concealed weapons is that nobody knows you have them, also it's legal in the state I grew up in)

Oh and to further elaborate about the guns thing -- my parents owned guns but they were safely stored in the house and unloaded and I don't remember even knowing where they were, or knowing they had them other than them mentioning them and me seeing my mom's revolver once (which was an antique anyway). When we would go see my relatives in Arkansas during the summers sometimes they'd shoot, they live in an extremely rural area where this is common, hunting and fishing are pretty much all the recreation there is out there, so it wasn't seen as abnormal. I still don't think it's abnormal. I was allowed to shoot a few times but once when I was younger the recoil on a shotgun I was allowed to fire really scared the shit out of me, and later in college I shot a revolver at my uncle's place and I really sucked at it, so I just never had any interest in it. Range shooting actually seems like fun but... whatever

As for drug use, I sort of meant more hard drugs. Like, my area was pretty rampant with meth abuse. Labs all over the goddamn place. My neighbor had one, in fact.

I'm sorry to hear about the verbal abuse in your family. :( It's pretty standard where I grew up, too, to the point where verbal abuse isn't considered abuse, it's just kind of the way you get spoken to.

(And yeah, I do mean abuse, as in the way that most adults disciplines and addressed children is generally through fear, threats, insults, etc. Just cause it's normal doesn't make it any less terrifying when it happens. It just sort of happened to everyone else, too. I only realized it wasn't normal when I went away to college.)

Now that you mention it, I think people in my community seemed to believe that yelling at kids was appropriate, when it really isn't

The neighborhood I grew up in used to be kind of nice but most of the people who lived around us were pretty old, their children had left and eventually they either sold their houses and left or they died off, so a lot of these houses became rental properties with different people coming and going all the time. That's what it's like now... and it's gotten pretty economically depressed in that part of town, so around the time it was getting that way, a lady moved across the street that almost definitely was running a meth lab. Her kids used to come over to our house and bum cigarettes, the mother would come over and ask if we had any rubbing alcohol she could have because her son fell down the stairs, whatever, it was a different story every time. She had all these scabs on her face and was really thin and gross, and there was an ambulance at that house every other week. Her boyfriend or husband or whoever he was would drive home drunk all the time. So yeah, that's the kind of neighborhood it became by around the time I had started college, I'm sure she wasn't the only meth user (or maker) in that part of town by a long shot.

Oh I also forgot to mention this kid that used to wander around the neighborhood holding a gun, who couldn't have been older than 9 years old. Sometimes he would walk into our yard and basically sexually harass my sisters (thankfully without the gun) until my dad came out and yelled at him to go away. FUN TIMES IN THE HOOD.

Ew, yeah. That sounds very familiar. I remember my neighbor (who was living on the property rent-free because he was supposedly fixing up the place) ended up fucking up the basement really bad from what was probably a small explosion from his meth set up.

I guess I feel kind of weird that I don't and didn't find it really dangerous? I used to get kicks from making the druggies paranoid by staring at them when they used to come and make pick ups for drugs. Which, I guess is kind of a bad idea, but really it was the least I could do for them dealing drugs right next to me.

Omg, holy shit, I almost forgot about the bath salt usage.

That shit is crazy nasty. Turns people into fucking cannibal zombie assholes.

Currently, that is simply all the rage in my home community. Until they banned its sale in my county, not that it stops anybody.
