When it comes to a character that is as dependent on the actor's interpretation as the Doctor is, that's not an unreasonable reaction to have. Plus, it's painfully obvious he hated his job during his last season, and couldn't stand to work with Lalla Ward when their marriage was going down the tubes. So it's not that ridiculous.

And it goes the other way too. I probably would always have found Ten interesting no matter who he was played by, but I probably wouldn't have loved him if David Tennant's joy and enthusiasm for the role wasn't so palpable.
