That sucks, OP :( Maybe if you watch it kind of casually, you'll get used to separating the actor from the character more?

Incidentally, I had the opposite reaction with Six -- he was a pretty big dick and often poorly-written in the show, but everything I've heard about Colin Baker was so nice it bled over and may have made me like Six more than I would have otherwise.

Colin Baker was a doll. I got to meet him once, and he was absolutely charming.

And somewhat barmy. But I think he was in character at the time.

I've met him too. He was a lovely guy and very easy to talk to. :)

I didn't know Tom Baker was a dickwad. I'd heard he was completely barking mad, but in a mostly harmless way, but not a dickwad. How so?

(Anonymous) 2013-02-27 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
He was a prima donna, and apparently was rude to everyone he worked with in the last couple years of his run. IMO he just stayed on too long and got sick of the job.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-27 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
This would have been during the same period he had a drinking problem, yes?

+1 have heard this as well.

I was pretty 'meh' on Five, but Peter Davison has made me start to like him more and more.

I am confused OP

(Anonymous) 2013-02-27 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
OP! Where are you getting this from? I never ran across anything that suggested that. I have not read or watched every interview ever, but...IDGI? Obvs. he's not Four, but I don't get it.......

(Anonymous) 2013-02-27 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
When it comes to a character that is as dependent on the actor's interpretation as the Doctor is, that's not an unreasonable reaction to have. Plus, it's painfully obvious he hated his job during his last season, and couldn't stand to work with Lalla Ward when their marriage was going down the tubes. So it's not that ridiculous.

And it goes the other way too. I probably would always have found Ten interesting no matter who he was played by, but I probably wouldn't have loved him if David Tennant's joy and enthusiasm for the role wasn't so palpable.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-27 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
The same thing happened to me. I think it's because he's so often touted as the best Doctor and almost no one ever says anything about what an asshole the actor was. I hadn't seen any of his episodes before I found out, either. So I never had a chance to grow to love him as the Doctor because I was already aware of how vile a person he was.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-27 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
He seems rectal-impairment-free on the Tom Baker Forum where he interacts with fans. Crazier than a sack of hammers, but otherwise funny and self-parodying? I hope so anyway.

sa

BTW Four was the best Doctor ever. So I msy be sliiiiiiiiiiiiightly biased. :-)

*may

(Anonymous) 2013-02-27 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
nayrt

I think he used to be a jerk for a while when he was on the show, but has mellowed out a lot since then.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-27 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
ayrt

As mentioned upthread, didn't he say he had a drinking problem at the time? I'm not saying that's a justifiable excuse or anything, though.

Actually fandom seems completely unaware of his reputation on the show and in the industry as a complete bastard. Maybe the ones who read Elisabeth Sladen's book are partially aware, but for the most part they didn't even seem to pick up on it in that.

Awh, that sucks. He's my favorite. D: I'm always so glad I don't care about actors when I watch stuff!

Still, at least there are plenty of other Doctors to love on?

(Anonymous) 2013-02-27 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
People change, or stay the same, but no one is ever perfect.

You don't always have to love the actor, to love the character.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-27 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
Four was never my favourite to begin with. I love plenty of his serials, but I normally feel like I'm laughing at him instead of being attached to him the way I am with most of the others.

Each individual Doctor is, in many ways, more connected to his actor than the average character. After all, so much of what makes the show special is based around how much that character changes when he changes actors.

I totally agree with several other people in this thread that I've liked several Doctors way more after reading/watching some interviews with their actors. DW fandom is pretty lucky with how many of its actors and actresses appear to be honestly lovely and intelligent people in real life, and at how engaged with the show many of them seem to still be, even the ones for whom its decades after the fact.

Plus, it was Tennant's enthusiasm that got me from 'I like this show' to 'FANDOM!', and from 'I like the new series' to 'Well, if he's so excited about the Classic series, it's certainly worth a go'.
(Which then turned into me liking certain portions of Classic Who quite a lot better)

Yeah, someone used the phrase "The Tom Baker Comedy half Hour" in one of the Who lj-groups a few days ago, and that sums up my feelings for a lot of his stuff. There was some good stuff early on when they were doing the old Hammer Horror type scripts and the last two stories were good (would be great, but for Adric being in them), the rest of it is just Tom mugging for the camera and being silly. Plus he once did an entire scene with a massive booger hanging from his nose and refused to let them reshoot it because it was funny.

Well, this is embarrassing

I was scrolling really fast and saw the words "Tom Baker" and "huge dick" and got so excited that I scrolled back up to read the whole thing. What a letdown. :(

Seriously, da fuck is wrong with me? O_o

Four was *my* doctor, but I heard a few times in subsequent years that he was a huge dick. There were no real details given, but that didn't stop me from being disappointed.
