I'm not quite getting the meaning of the "actual gay characters with lives and histories" part. Like, is it just that you like sexually experienced characters in fiction?

Because, wouldn't any sexually active gay or lesbian person have to have a "first gay experience" at some point, making it a necessary part of their lives and histories?
