I agree with this secret. I don't read m/m of f/f, but I do find it really weird in het when i know a character very likely had sex and is seemingly proud of theri sexuality be turned int a blush virgin. I mean I understand that that may be some peoples kink but it just seems to OC to me to be taken realistically.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-27 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
I think the thing that makes them write the characters as virgins because if they write them like that, they can get away with knowing nothing about the mechanics of Gay/Lesbian sex. I know if I ever moved away from het, I might use the virginity ploy to make it seem like I know what I'm writing about too.

One other possible for Dual First Timers is the "I didn't know I was Gay Til I met you" trope.

Most het fanfics I read are about both characters' first times, too. I think it's because most people who write fanfic are virgins themselves and therefore writing about someone's first time is easier because they don't have to sound experienced.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-27 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
A huge number of people also have virgin kinks, so.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-27 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
I definitely fall into the virgin kink category. I've been sexually active for a very long time but I exclusively write first time fic and it's my preference for reading, too.

Less research required.

I'm also going to go out on a (probably very stable) limb and say they probably find it somewhat hot for both to be virgins, and since in the end a lot of it boils down to porn, well.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-27 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
Are you me? I'm totally in touch with this.

Yeah, I'm cool if one of them is a virgin for whatever reason, but if they're both reasonably attractive and socially competent adults, I'm going to want a really good explanation.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-27 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
Just for the record, at what age must one lose one's virginity to be considered a "reasonably attractive and socially competent adult"?

hmm, i don't mind if they're virgins, but i took this secret to mean that the characters' previous sexual experience was all heterosexual until meeting each other...? because i see that a lot.

in which case, yeah, i'm kinda tired of that too and i wish that didn't feel like the standard. as a gay person, i just can't really relate to it...

(Anonymous) 2013-02-27 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
So...I'm sorry, I must be confused. Please choose one of the following for clarification:
A) two characters who both know they're gay are having their first gay experience, but may have had straight experiences before
B) both characters are gay and virgins
C) both characters have assumed they were straight until this particular gay experience

Because if it's A or B, tough shit, but that's real life sometimes. I could understand C because it's often used to justify canon straightness and ignore the possibility of bisexuality. But otherwise... NEWSFLASH: SOMETIMES PEOPLE ARE VIRGINS.

(fyi people, i don't think op is saying the characters are virgins, but that all the experience they've had before has been heterosexual.)

hey, that's fine, you can't relate. as long as you're not suggesting that people shouldn't write it or enjoy reading it. cause personally i find it harder to relate the other way around, because i'm heterosexual. anyway, i've actually come across a TON of fics that don't use the 'first gay experience' trope. it depends on the fandom you're in, but sometimes i go through entire rec lists without seeing my trope. which makes me sad.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-27 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
I admit I'm a little put off by the "actual gay characters with lives and histories" bit because I'm a virgin and I don't think that negates my lived experience of being homosexual? Hoping this was an accident of writing and not the actual sentiment.

Yes! Especially when one of the characters does kind of ping gaydars.

Sometimes I just want to read about the characters I love being queer people with relateable experiences, rather than straightish people who happen to fall in love/lust and keep it totally divorced from their identities.

I think that a lot of people just get off on "first times". I mean I've seen a lot of that trope in fic about het and/or canon couples too. I think it's because a lot of fic writers are still young and exploring their own sexuality through fiction.

Having both characters be inexperienced can also give it something sweet and innocent.

While, especially if you're a more seasoned fic reader, I can totally understand why it bothers you, I get where it comes from, and I actually like some of the stories.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-27 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
Well, it makes sense if the characters are exhibited as heterosexual in the source material, I guess?

I've read a lot of badfic where one party is experienced (usually not both for whatever reason) so I can't say the dynamic mentioned puts me off more than anything else.

Okay, first off, everyone starts off as a virgin. Gay, straight, bi, ace, we're all born virgins and if someone wishes to have a sexual experience, at least one of those experiences will be the first time.

Personally, I like the happy awkwardness of first times in fic. Not necessarily "virgin" fics, though it includes that, but two characters' first experiences with each other. There's experimental touches and kisses, finding out what works and what doesn't between them, with the assumption there will be other times in the future to perfect it and discover more. By not including these kinds of moments in the first sex scene between two characters, you're whittling their relationship down to tab-A-in-slot-B (or whichever combination fits the circumstance), they've had sex before so obviously they're Casanovas and everything works out perfect, and that's incredibly boring to me.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-27 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
All of the characters in all of my fandoms are heterosexual. There is little chemistry in any of the het pairings in them but tons of slash/femslash chemistry, so those are the pairings we tend to ship in all of them. I don't care about the character's sexuality or if you or anyone else enjoys reading the porn about them; I care about the characters and the characterizations and the chemistry. For once, I seem to be in the majority on something in fandom.

I'm not quite getting the meaning of the "actual gay characters with lives and histories" part. Like, is it just that you like sexually experienced characters in fiction?

Because, wouldn't any sexually active gay or lesbian person have to have a "first gay experience" at some point, making it a necessary part of their lives and histories?

(Anonymous) 2013-02-27 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
Um... there can be, and often is such a thing, as a homosexual virgin, ya know?

The holier-than-thou implication that people who enjoy first times don't enjoy "actual gay characters with lives and histories" is kind of souring this secret for me tbh.
Like there was a decent point here, and then you had to ruin it with your smugness.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-27 05:03 am (UTC)(link)
While I understand, I think I wouldn't mind more first-time fics if the authors took the idea less toward the 'have amazing, mind blowing sex the first time' to 'have an enjoyable, sweet, awkward, fumbling first time'.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-27 04:11 pm (UTC)(link)
lmao to the comment analysing this secret. I love first time fics, either het or slash, because they are hot. It has nothing to do with how I see gay people in real life. I just get off on the innocence and fumbling and shock at experiencing sexual pleasure of that sort for the first time.
