Well, it makes sense if the characters are exhibited as heterosexual in the source material, I guess?

I've read a lot of badfic where one party is experienced (usually not both for whatever reason) so I can't say the dynamic mentioned puts me off more than anything else.

this is an extremely good point and probably at least partly the reason it's so prevalent. if the characters are for all intents and purposes heterosexual in canon, the writer might want to include that in their story because it's part of their characterization.

The only time that bothers me is when characters blatantly have heterosexual tendencies and the author just pulls a, "Gay now!" like their obvious enjoyment of the opposite sex is suddenly rendered null and void because they like ONE person of the same sex :| Characters like that I tend to write as bi/pansexual or bicurious at least. (I've actually had people get on my case for writing a character as pansexual, even though he's originally from a time and place where same-sex tendencies would likely get him killed. He's never canonically stated to not be into dudes, and is in fact overly-friendly with them anyway. BUT NO, OBVIOUSLY BECAUSE HE'S BLATANTLY INTO WOMEN HE CAN ONLY BE STRAIGHT. Argh. /end rant)

BUT NO, OBVIOUSLY BECAUSE HE'S BLATANTLY INTO WOMEN HE CAN ONLY BE STRAIGHT. Argh.

For me it just depends on the character. If the character is shown as having a lot of relationship experience, and it is ONLY heterosexual, I think it's a bit of a stretch saying they're anything but bi-curious, and hesitantly so to boot. If they have very little experience to speak of, or their experience is not explicitly defined, I'm more willing to accept that they'd be bisexual or pansexual or whatnot.

I think that in the grand scheme of things, though, it bothers me much more when a fanfic writer depicts a character as gay or bisexual in a time period or place where it would get you, like, I don't know, sentenced to death or something, and the character just happily flaunts it and anybody who knows about it just as happily accepts it, and doesn't even bother to worry for the person's well-being.

Hah, no, this particular character was only 18/19 and was never shown or stated to have any actual experience whatsoever. His stated attraction to women is ridiculously over-the-top (to the point that I've headcanoned that it's to mask his touchy-feely-ness with the other guys). I've always written him as pansexual, especially for other reasons related to his particular character, and never denied that he was attracted to women, but somebody actually threatened to punch me in the face over it :| (Over IM, but still.)

I agree with everything you said, though, especially about not respecting the time period. If you can't or don't want to take into account the struggles a person in a same-sex relationship/with same-sex affections would face in their canon society, then just write an AU or something :/

lol@somebody threatening to punch you. Not that violence is funny, but that's a hilarious overreaction to have over a character.
