Lauren Faust said she had been building Twilight up to be Celestia's successor since episode one, so lolno. She was always going to be an alicorn.

Because everyone always tells the truth about creative decisions, esp in environments where those creative decisions are at times shaped or influenced by corporate mandates and executive pressure.

Yeah, I'm not a fan, but this is very true. Sometimes creators lie as to seem more in control. The Lost writers, for instance, frequently claimed they knew exactly how to tie up everything and where everything was going because it would make fans too nervous otherwise. They didn't.

I watched the first season of this show, actually, and I wouldn't have guessed that Twilight was anything but the Queen's helper assistant lady, a la Andrea Sachs from The Devil Wears Prada.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-01 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Or not even to seem in control. Just to give things a positive spin and get some good PR. Which would be especially relevant when something is causing massive fan uproar. That's the way the game is played.

I'm just saying, the fact that Faust said she was planning it doesn't mean she was.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-01 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Considering how candid Faust was about other aspects of the show, including some stuff she was stressed out about (for example, being pressured by execs to write products into an episode--this was how the whole wedding episode happened), I actually believe that she's telling the truth about building up to it from day one.

Plus the whole blahblah Day/Night princesses and Twilight is between them both, etc.

Someone on tumblr pointed out something that breaks the whole night/dawn/day/twilight thing.

Celestia and Luna represent the Sun and Moon, day and night.

Cadence represents love....and Twilight represents FRIENDSHIP.

Twilight and Cadence make up a different duo, love and friendship.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-01 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
to be fair, there's no reason Twilight can't be part of two themes at once vOv

(but as a huge fan of Cadence and her friendship with Twilight, thank you so much for bringing this to my attention! ♥)

I know, but Cadence and Twilight don't have anything to do with the Dawn and, well, Twilight, with their powers, so that always confuses me really.

(aww, you're welcome. ^^ i'm quite fond of them myself and i had a little squee attack over that little revelation)

(Anonymous) 2013-03-01 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
I can't say EP1S1, but I predicted it as of EP1S3.

Besides, why the hell would she need a personal student otherwise? What was the endgame. I believe it.

No she wasn't. She said she'd always be her successor. NOT an alicorn. This was a direction and decision made after she left, love or hate it.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-01 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
It seems like "successor" and "alicorn" are really just semantics at this point, since apparently in the show, the only princesses are all alicorns.

Though this does raise an interesting question: Can any pony become an alicorn, or can only unicorns do it? Are earth ponies and pegasai basically fucked and can never ascend to princessdom as a result?

[personal profile] insanenoodlyguy 2013-03-01 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I should provide citation

To me, this looks like a pretty nice way of saying "I had nothing to do with this." There's nothing in the bible about it, no sketches of any kind, nothing to contradict this.

Also, she didn't even want Cadence to be a Alicorn originally. And Celestia was supposed to be a queen. Obviously all of this changed, but a lot of that was the call of somebody else (except the Queen part, that was changed before the show started obviously)

We already knew that Unicorn were the superior Pony Race. Before Celestia, it was they that brought the night and day.

The Alicorn is simply the ultimate Unicorn. Die Überpony

da

Interesting!

I hadn't seen those tweets before, thanks!

(Anonymous) 2013-03-01 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Interesting!

I heard the reason Celestia wasn't a queen was because queens in cartoons are almost always evil, and they didn't want people thinking that would be the case with Celestia, so they decided to make her a princess instead.

Though honestly, she seems very queen-like, and it's obvious she's not on the same level as other princesses in the show, given she's effectively some kind of sun deity.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-01 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
Not that it stopped some people from thinking she's evil anyway. *eyeroll*

(Anonymous) 2013-03-01 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
Making her an alicorn so soon=/=Stating she never planned to make her one eventually.

I think we can logic that if she didn't intend to have more then the alicorns introduced at the beginning, there were no plans in motion for alicorns.

This was Hasbro's decision, pure and simple.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-01 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
except not so pure and simple, there's no evidence that this was a unilateral decision by solely Hasbro. Honestly the whole finale smacked of being a potential series finale with the whole montage at the end, and given how the episode was said by the writers to have been written back in 2011 it's much more likely that this thing was written as a potential end to the series itself, since back then the shortened season would have put them at the magical 65 episode syndication mark that has killed so many kid's shows in the past. When it was written there was probably much more uncertainty over whether or not there would even be a season 4, maybe a direct to T.V. movie at a later date or maybe corporate was debating having the equestria girls spinoff be the new direction while axing the original series.

Honestly, a lot of season 3 came off like the writers were trying to wrap things up with a couple of vague outs in case season 4 became a reality, the trixie and discord episode, scootaloo finally getting an episode, and rainbow dash finally making it into the wonderbolts academy.

Actually especially the wonderbolts academy the original ending to that episode very much came off like an attempt to wrap up dash's ambitions by having her choose her friends and morals over her ambition. The current ending leaves things much more open for future development and could have changed after season 4 was actually confirmed.

But eh whatever, it's all speculation, I just highly doubt the alicorn Twilight decision was solely a Hasbro thing.

This leak was from a source that was reliable about other things in the past. It came out before the 4th season was confirmed and while Alicorn Twilight was still being denied.

Man, I was wondering if I was the only person who thought this. Yes it seems like all princesses are alicorns but we don't know if that was how Faust originally designed it. It seems far more plausible to me that Hasbro took Faust's original idea about succession and turned it into a toy opportunity.

My headcanon has always been that alicorns are born, not made. It's genetic. In lieu of actual daughters, Celestia could have groomed Twilight for the job regardless of "type" (what's the official term for that? is it just "type"?) - of course there's Cadance but she wasn't originally an alicorn either, huh?

idk man.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-01 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
Or it could be both, Faust could have pitched the alicorn twilight idea and then Hasbro decided to run with it and mandate it at the end of season 3 rather than a potential series finale, or it could have been planned by the writers far enough in advance for Hasbro to start making toys of it since the episode was supposedly written back in 2011.

Either way, the toys don't always follow the show or vice versa, we've still yet to see any mention or hint of princess Skyla despite existing as a toy for a year now, and we are only now starting to see models of background characters that have been hanging around since season 1.

otakugal15: (C:)

[personal profile] otakugal15 2013-03-01 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
Nope, actually. Faust only wanted 2 alicorns. That's it. Only 2.

Then Cadence came along. And now Twilight.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-01 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, this has never been stated, the only thing Faust ever mentioned about it was that Cadance was originally intended to be a unicorn. This could mean that there were only ever supposed to be 2 or it could mean that the whole alicorn ascension thing was only meant for twilight later to make it more special or rare.

Given the nature of television shows it's entirely possible that Mrs. Faust never planned that far ahead or even had multiple conflicting ideas, people need to remember that T.V. is designed by committee and writers rarely ever plan things out to a concrete detailed end when they are just starting.

Yeah, yeah, and Dumbledore was always gay.
