Weight Loss

What are some good (less than $40) weight loss tools/items every one has used?

Decent sneakers for jogging. Light, airy, decent traction.

I would have said this, but most (good) running shoes cost waaaaaaaaay more than $40.

That said, they're totally worth the investment.

Portion control. I saved money on food, brought my appetite down to a healthy level, and all the exercise I do was finally able to work off calories and fat.

Depends on your method or weight loss. But a small food scale has been a great help to me.

Pedometer is another little thing that's helped. Keeping track of steps each day motivates me to move more throughout the day and challenge myself to keep a min step number or 'beat' the previous days number.

Spending $40 less per... month (or whatever amount of time) on junk food than I used to (-$40.00)

Exercise ($0.00)

Ankle weights. I started with 2 lbs weights and after a month I went up to 5 lbs. I also use a pedometer like someone else mentioned and it a great motivator.

Glad ankle weights work for you, but I'd warn OP that if they are already a large person, they're likely carrying more than enough weight already and I would not reccomend adding more to the ankles.

8 lb dumbbell, resistence bands, maybe a pedometer, and shoes appropriate for your cardio of choice.

My fitness pal for calorie counting/portion control, starting a jogging routine, using your own body weight for strength training exercises - all free! and if you want some more dirction, jillian michael's 30 day shred is awesome, which can torrent for free but i'm pretty sure it's also ridiculously cheap to buy as well.

I wholehearted agree on myfitness pal, OP, it can be downloaded as an app or used through the internet (both for free).

Also youtubing zumba routines if you like that kind of stuff.

The Lose-It app for my phone is a really good calorie tracker with a bunch of pre-programmed foods, so it's super easy. I lost something like 10 pounds pretty much just by doing that a couple of years ago, and I'm currently down 7 pounds in the past month and a half by combining that with regular running.

WHAT IS THE BEST METHOD TO LOSE WEIGHT FAST AND SAFELY: PRODUCTS OR GUIDES? http://weightlossoffer.webs.com

Re: Weight Loss

(Anonymous) 2013-03-02 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
Brushing my teeth after a meal or snack so I'm not inclined to start munching too soon.

Mopping the kitchen floor after I'm done cleaning up from the evening meal so I don't go back into the kitchen for the rest of the evening.

Eating very filling breakfasts and lunches and then very small suppers and no evening snacks.

These are excellent tips. Also my kitchen gets mopped about once every 6 months so killing two birds with one stone is probably a good idea

Vegetables.

Replacing all my soda intake with seltzer and water. Better hydration means I'm chugging fewer cans overall, and removing the sugar reduces the craving for sweets in general, lowers my tolerance so I can't take in as much sugar in one sitting anyway, and makes regular food taste better overall. Switching to diet sodas doesn't actually do anything for you in the long run, as far as weight loss, because the artificial sweeteners are like 100x sweeter than regular sugar, which ends up killing your tastebuds' sensitivity to sweet things, and also makes your body crave the calories it was expecting. Avoid things with aspartame, sucralose, or even stevia. (Stevia's not quite as bad because it is natural, but it's still a no/low-calorie sweetener and I'm inclined to believe it still has similar consequences.)

Also, a decent cookbook. Making your own food costs less overall than pre-packaged meals or fast food, you have much greater control over what all goes into it, and if you're not big on exercise, it's a good reason/excuse to be on your feet.

I side-eye anything that tries to claim that if you just spend money on their product, you can lose weight without changing your lifestyle. Portion control and cutting back on the unnecessary crap that gets put in a lot of things goes a long way.

Resistance bands!
http://www.amazon.com/b?ie=UTF8&node=3407931

*ignore that this is Amazon, just wanted to give you an idea*

They can give you a hell of a workout. The set i have has green 'light' resistance and orange 'heavy' resistance bands, which just means green is easy to stretch and orange is harder. You can put both together for super-heavy once you're in better shape.

Pirated copy of Insanity

The workouts are, obviously, insane, but it's taught me some key things like how to hold your core and what kinds of stretches to do. It's my temporary workout until it's warm enough to go running outside again.

Also seconding the anons who discussed food options. That's more important than exercise, I believe.

Cut out all soda. Juice, coffee, milk, and tea are still fine, just no soda. I dropped five pound in three weeks.

this! seconding this forever!

I cut out the soda and have been drinking water instead for all my meals and for sipping and I slimmed down, without doing exercise

I was all like :O holy shit it was true

(I drink coffee, milk, juice and tea every now and then, too)

I use SparkPeople! Admittedly some of the food tracking stuff is pretty crap if you're outside the US, though.
