If you're making that argument, why not just kill them?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-02 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
Because they're a boring troll.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-02 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
That would be murder. Its our duty to preserve life for as long as we can. Besides, when a lobotomized rapist shows at St Peter's court then it will count to time off purgatory for his sins to have endured that humiliation on earth. It helps his soul and doesn't tarnish ours by keeping him alive but incapable.

Lobotomizing a person with the intent to humiliate them and make them experience "a living death" (as someone called it upthread) doesn't tarnish our souls just because we didn't kill the person outright?

mte.

You might make this argument if the person affected has the choice between a lobotomy and being killed. As it stands, that's not how that fucking works.

Even if you do believe in irreversible punishment for crimes.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-02 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
why not? rapists don't deserve to live.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-02 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
Murder has to be wrong for everyone, even the state. Lobotomizations are the next best thing to the death penalty. All the control and punishment with none of the taking of life.

Because mutilation is that much better? Really? It took us centuries to get that out of the criminal justice system and you want to bring is back? Shall we start chopping of hands for thieving, too?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-02 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
That is just being ridiculous. Theft doesn't hurt people in the same way rape does. I'd be fine with lobotomies for serious sexual and violent offenders. They are in a whole nother league from thieves.

That's not the point. The point is you're regressing to a point where taking torture and taking away bodily autonomy becomes acceptable as a form of punishment. I do not think that we should ever allow for that, as a society.

Yes. Unequivocally and unreservedly yes. If someone is found guilty of rape, then being lobotomized and left to rot is a fair response. Here's a better question, why do you think rapists rights to freedom are stronger than their victims? Why are you so keen to defend rapists?
(reply from suspended user)

(Anonymous) 2013-03-02 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
To the first I believe that lobotomy is the best and most moral alternative to the death penalty, something which merely covers us all with the sin of murder; and to the second, as long as they themselves are not also a rapist then I could never not feel sympathetic.

I find this particularly interesting since you pointed out upthread that sexual abuse can be cyclical...

I can't tell if you're being serious about the sin thing but if you are, I...don't think sin works like that. It's not like "this thing is less bad/less of a sin"

Raping people is wrong.
Killing people is wrong.
Mutilating people is wrong.

ALL of those things are wrong and not ever okay.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-02 09:34 am (UTC)(link)
If your personal degree of sin in inflicting punishment is your basis for choosing appropriate punishments, you need to get out. As a survivor, I don't want your fucking twisted sympathy.

I have fucking recovered. I don't mind being hugged anymore, and I even managed to develop a sexual appetite again. And my experience has not made me so twisted and broken that I can't tell humane from inhumane anymore. Even if I were for the death penalty (which I'm not), I'd still understand that a lobotomy is not a lighter sentence.

You need help.
