A good place to kind of start that's pretty small is focusing on your nails. =D My friend's sister is a nail tech and she has me more interested in filing my nails almost daily and trying to keep my nails all the same length (when I was younger I didn't care if some nails were constantly chipped and others were like 1/4 inch long) and putting cuticle oil on before going to bed. I also put nail polish on during the weekends since I'm not allowed to wear nail polish at work.

Makeup-wise, I agree with starting small and working your way up. Don't worry about brands too much. Drugstore brands these days can be pretty good. If you're on a budget as well, ELF Cosmetics is a really good place to start. A good chunk of their affordable products are good quality considering the prices, especially their brushes.

Fashion-wise, all I can really say is don't be afraid to get shoes that aren't black. Sometimes, all you need to make your outfit look snappier is a pop of color with your shoes. Black shoes can be boring and I'm actually trying to break out of that trend myself.
