Beyond basic hygiene?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-02 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
(Weird title, I know. Don't really know what else to call it.)

So, I've never really done anything beyond wash hair, brush teeth, brush hair, clean clothes etc. bare minimum for my appearance. I mean, yeah, I've prettied upped a few times, but that's always been with someone else's help. So I figure that I should probably learn, but really have no idea where to begin. Uh, so if any of you guys could help, that would be most fantastic.

(Female, by the way.)

I think that falls under "etc."

I hope...

OP!

I thought that was implied with basic hygiene and washing hair? I take daily showers, thank you. :I

If you mean makeup, you could start practicing with foundation or powder and using lipstick or lipgloss. Those are the easiest to use, and after you are comfortable with them, you could try moving on to mascara.

Other than that, maybe change your hairstyle.

Yeah, make-up and clothing choices. Suppose I should have been more specific. Thank you, by the way!

And changing up my hairstyle sounds like a good idea! Do you have any recommendations for hair a bit less than shoulder length? I was thinking about getting it cut a bit shorter in the back? Would this be a good idea?

DA - I would advise against foundation because it's really unhealthy for your skin. It's ok for occasional use, particularly photographs, but you shouldn't use it daily.

DA

To be fair, if you don't have a lot of skincare problems you don't really need foundation.

A good option for foundation is BB creams. I personally love the Korean brand Missha. It helps even up my skintone, especially since my skin is prone to breakouts.

OP!

I still have some minor acne, but I'm succesfully working on clearing it up. (Some face cleansers and acne medicine.) Always been hesitant on make-up because it makes my skin breakout, so I'll definitely check out those BB creams you mentioned.

(And to the anon above you, definitely won't wear foundation everyday. Just need to learn how to use it, haha.)

Late to this but OP, I totally second the BB cream rec. :) I have pretty clear skin that is also a bit sensitive so I very very rarely wear foundation because I don't really need to and I don't want to screw with my skin. BUT! I recently started wearing a daily BB cream and it makes my face absolutely glow -- with no ill effects so far! My skin has actually never looked better, IMO.

The site that kluify posted (and other similar virtual hairstyle sites) are an excellent help for finding a suitable hairstyle, since it depends so much on the shape of your face and the thickness of your hair. If you upload your picture and try out different alternatives, I'm sure you'll find a couple that will look good on you.

are you talking about make-up/fashion? if you want a speed guide for how to do it right, i'd start with finding your colouring. i know, i know, the whole 'what's your season?' thing sounds really stupid and cliched, but if you actually follow your colours you inevitably do end up wearing colours that flatter you. so go to a site like this: http://personalitycafe.com/general-chat/37461-what-your-color-season-spring-summer-autumn-winter-fun.html and work out what you are. From there you have a basic palette to choose coloured clothes and make-up from that you know will flatter you.

from there, i'd work out your body type so you can know what styles of clothing will be flattering on you. There are lots of sites that do this, but this one: http://www.bodyshapefashionadvice.com/ has a quiz, so it might help you more. these aren't prescriptive guides mind you, but they narrow down the selection field of clothes if you don't know what will look good on you.

if you want to learn how to put on make-up, there are lots of make-up tutorials on youtube that can help. but really, i'd start simple - find a foundation (or even just a tinted moisturised/bb cream) that suits your colouring, if you need one, maybe some mascara and a lipgloss or lipstick. that's all i wear, if i'm going out during the day and want to look nice-ish. you can practice things like eyeshadow, eyeliner, blush in your own time and see what suits and what doesn't if you want to wear that kind of stuff when you go out at night or whatever, but you don't have to learn everything at once. maybe ask the person who helps you 'pretty up' to have a fun night in with you practising make-up? (oh, and don't forget to wash your make-up off at night!)

other than that, moisturiser and sunscreen would be good things to get into your routine.

i hope some, or any of this stuff helps!

oooh, i just saw that you were thinking about getting a hair cut to change things up - you can also have a look at guides like this: http://www.thehairstyler.com/features/articles/hairstyles/the-right-hairstyle-for-your-face-shape to work out what type of hair-style will suit you. (i know, i know, i'm obsessed with guides). obvs you don't have to follow it exactly, but looking at something like this can help you avoid hair disasters, or on a milder scale give you tips like whether bangs would work for you or not :) (bangs don't work on me, sadness - but i keep trying anyway!)

This is absolutely fantastic advice! Thank you so very much! :D!

(And those guides are great!)

Glad I could help! I used to work at a clothes shop where we were supposed to be able to tell people what they should buy based on their colouring and body-shape as they walked in the door, so it's nice to be able to use that knowledge outside of work :)

If you want to start wearing make up, you could always go to a department store make up counter or have someone like a Mary Kay rep visit you. They tend to be really good at determining the best kinds of make up for you features and how you should wear them. It isn't the same for everyone and make up should highlight your features, not obscure them. Poorly applied cosmetics have the exact opposite effect as the one you're going for.

A good place to kind of start that's pretty small is focusing on your nails. =D My friend's sister is a nail tech and she has me more interested in filing my nails almost daily and trying to keep my nails all the same length (when I was younger I didn't care if some nails were constantly chipped and others were like 1/4 inch long) and putting cuticle oil on before going to bed. I also put nail polish on during the weekends since I'm not allowed to wear nail polish at work.

Makeup-wise, I agree with starting small and working your way up. Don't worry about brands too much. Drugstore brands these days can be pretty good. If you're on a budget as well, ELF Cosmetics is a really good place to start. A good chunk of their affordable products are good quality considering the prices, especially their brushes.

Fashion-wise, all I can really say is don't be afraid to get shoes that aren't black. Sometimes, all you need to make your outfit look snappier is a pop of color with your shoes. Black shoes can be boring and I'm actually trying to break out of that trend myself.

Use moisturizer. If you're lazy, like me, use a moisturizing body wash in the shower to kill two birds with one stone. It makes your skin feel nice.

Everyone has posted good advice, but I want to emphasize in a skincare routine! Face and body. There are a lot of DIY masks you can apply to your face, and feeling the body's skin soft is very nice.

Take care of your feet too, and you'll see how just walking can feel amazing. Go to a pedicurist, you'll see what I mean.

This makes me want to Jeremy Renner to be my aggressively metro make-up artist. If this is wrong, I don't want to be right.
