I'm the opposite. I love genderswap best if it's only one character and that character is the center of the fic. When it gets to be everyone genderswapped, it just has less impact and is less interesting.

Same. There are only certain characters that I'm interested in seeing genderswapped and typically my interest goes down if multiple characters are swapped.

I get annoyed with the whole "you only genderswap the one dude because you want het and not slash" stuff too, I may add as a side note. I like reading genderswap of the one dude because he's the one I like reading genderswap of. And once genderswapped, I like reading fic with said dude paired off with men and women, giving fun het and delicious femslash, neither of which are particularly popular in my fandom and both of which I occasionally enjoy, along with the slash and het versions of those same pairings.

Yeah, that's crazy ridiculous, because most of what I read and write is slash. And most of what the genderswap writers I read write is slash. I hear horror stories of how in the past it was mainly done by anti-slashers, but that hasn't been the case for the 10 years I've been in fandom.

Also, what's wrong with het. This argument reminds me of the silly fangirls who just discovered that slash exists and wave around their "Het is Ew" banners and mistake being turned on by gay sex for being socially progressive.

I think for fanart it's fun to see everyone swapped, although I'll admit this is partially for recognition-of-what-the-hell-is-going-on purposes: if for Final Fantasy I see a long-haired blonde with blue eyes wearing Cloud's uniform with Tifa and Aerith, I might be confused if that's actually a genderswapped Cloud or an OC (especially if the expression isn't a typical one for Cloud). If Tifa and Aerith are genderswapped as well it instantly clarifies who *everyone* is.

In fanfic though I only want a small number to be genderswapped though--for me the whole point is playing around with how society's expectations and gender roles might have affected a character. If everyone's swapped I'm liable to think it's either changed too much for me to still be interested in it as a fanfic for that fandom, or if it's changed little that any differences between how women and men are treated are ignored (and then if I see anything that strikes as sexist in the fic it definitely rubs me wrong), or it's changed so little that genderswapping for that fandom was kind of pointless anyway. Fanart and fanfic are pretty different for me.
