I have no idea what you're talking about because I've never seen "we all know" in a prompt, but I think this secret is adorable.

My own fandom pet peeve is misspelled secrets, like the one below yours.

Not the OP.

I seen things like, "we all know [Character X]'s feelings were hurt in [abc episode]... " then the prompt goes on to explain how they want the other characters punished.

Which always annoys me because I've never thought the character's feelings where hurt, nor did I think the other characters needed to be pushed for anything.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-02 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed. In fact, I don't think I've ever seen that phrase used in a way that didn't annoy me. If it's something we all actually know, it's canon and people don't mention it like that. If it's a headcanon...well, I've never met one that I agree with.

I love your background pic, OP ;)

(Anonymous) 2013-03-02 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I've seen it referring to headcanon I didn't share, headcanon I did share, widely accepted fanon, and canon.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-02 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Most of the time I see it being used like "we all know (canon event) happened. What if it had gone differently?" I see no problem with that use

Haha, that background pic.

I want to say people are being tongue-in-cheek when they say that, but I guess not all of them are.

On one hand, fanon that you don't see being treated as obviously true is utterly infuriating.

On the other hand, isn't fanon fascinating, though? Thousands of people aren't necessarily even directly talking about it trying to negotiate a consensus on how we paraphrase what happened and then using it to assess how canon compliant fic is. Come on, that's gripping.

Great pic, OP!

And I feel you. This especially freaks me out with characters' sexualities and romantic relationships. "We all know that X had a crush on F" (when canonically it was not the case). Ugghh, no you don't. Shut the fuck up, man.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-02 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Aww, I think I'll think of pet peeves as little octopoid creatures from now on. I'm sure smiling at the adorableness instead of getting annoyed is probably a lot healthier. ;)

(Anonymous) 2013-03-02 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Even when it's not head canon, it's annoying. I was reading a prompt that went "We all know that this actor was replaced by this actor" and I was like "Um...had no idea!" Not everyone has devoured every bit of trivia about everything related to the films. It just has a smug, almost alienating feel about it.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-02 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
The picture you've used is adorable. I shall always imagine my pet peeves thusly.

[identity profile] nombrehetomado.livejournal.com 2013-03-02 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
This used to drive me up the wall.

I say "used to" not because I got over it, but because I stopped going to kink memes. A solution that deprived me of some good porn, but a solution nonetheless.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-02 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Haven't really seen it in ficathons, but seeing that sort of statement in fandom in general is frustrating. Tyzula comes to mind...

And we all know that if you're that annoyed by it, you're so far up your own ass that you're practically frenching yourself... through your ass.

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2013-03-03 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
That's all I came here to say.

Of course, now that I am here, I want to add that I really feel you, OP (the amount of fanon and headcanon interpretations being portrayed as canon in my main kinkmemes, right now, is frankly ridiculous).

But still, I mostly just love that comic. ♥

(Anonymous) 2013-03-03 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
OP, I have to know, what are your other 3,156 pet peeves. lol. So ridiculous. Get over it.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-03 04:18 am (UTC)(link)
I think the point of "we all know" is to weed out those who would disagree from the field of potential prompt fillers. Still annoying, though, because you're right, we don't all know.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-03 09:30 am (UTC)(link)
I've never seen it in prompts (but I have seen prompts that remind the reader of some minor canon facts, like "character X is afraid of spiders"), but I guess it would be annoying if referring to headcanons I don't share...

[identity profile] mimi-sardinia.livejournal.com 2013-03-03 11:02 am (UTC)(link)
Well I try to avoid using that wording, but I would expect it to only be used when covering the basic canon facts that are relevant to the prompt.

For instance, I posted a prompt on the Hobbit Kink Meme about the Arkenstone being a Silmaril. The first part of the prompt - the part that could have been opened with "We all know..." basically says "Well the First Age was basically a huge fight over three very shiny jewels". The fact that the First Age was a big fight over three very shiny jewels is fairly well known Tolkein canon, but I wouldn't say "We all know..." because I know there are a lot of LotR fans who haven't read The Silmarillion.
