Fandom-of-one experience?

[personal profile] dreemyweird 2013-03-02 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Hello, f!s. Have you ever been the only active member of a fandom? Did you post your works? Did it feel awkward?

Re: Fandom-of-one experience?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-02 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm a fandom of one and it is a little weird, but not as weird as you might think. I post my fic on AO3 along with works in other fandoms and I guess people like the way I write because the fandomless fics have gotten more traffic than I ever expected and even some kudos. I'm still holding out hope that maybe someday a fandom will sprout up since it's an unfinished book series.

OMG that's awesome. I'm in the exact same situation, and I'd be excited to see my fandom come to life. Cheers!

Oh man, I feel like such an obsessive jerk for writing and posting these tons of things for my non-existent fandom. I'm not even sure if they're any good. I'm afraid that I'm one of those Mediocre Prolific Writers/Artists.

I've looked into fandoms that were really tiny and dead, but was too lazy to actually get into them and make anything for it.

It feels like it some times, I'm one of two people who keep posting fics for my fandom. I loath their fics, and they've never acknowledged mine so it works out. It's a little more active on Tumblr so that helps.

I still get posting jitters even when I know any kind of comment or anything is doubtful. I fully intend to continue being active in it, even if I am eventually the only one. I'm working on several fics right now.

Ugh, that must feel awkward. Are their works badly written? Or is it the tropes they use?

I can never convince myself that it's not Snape on your icon.

Sorry got kinda TL;DR

I don't think I'm really in a position to judge quality, but the fandom Last Exile, is a steampunk Sci-Fi anime. They copy/paste poetry into nearly every chapter of their fics, I've seen what to me is really OOC stuff in their fics, a lot Japanese stuff, that were not, and would not have been used in series. Yes it was an anime, but the culture the characters lived in was not Japanese at all. The first fic they posted was a apparently a crossover with Naruto, which was then taken down rewritten and re-posted, they repeated this take down/rewrite/re-post about five times. When they started adding Greek gods in their second fic with no explanation like it was completely normal and canon I couldn't take it anymore, no matter how desperate for fic I hadn't written myself I was.

LOL 8D It's Alex Row my favorite Last Exile character with my two other favorite characters Sophia Forrester, and Vincent Alzey.
He has the same character archetype as Snape, with some personality differences.

LOL Greek gods make more sense than Japanese gods for Last Exile, like I said western culture, they use the Greek alphabet, and everyone has Greek based names. But gods were only refereed to in one line talking about the series MacGuffin, and if they even exist in series they sure as hell never interact with the characters as if it's the most normal thing in the world.

It wasn't the most annoying thing, but after everything else it was the last straw.

I've never been involved in such a thing in a fandom sense because, yeah, it feels kind of weird to be active about it if there's no-one else in the fandom. But there's a ton of things that I like which are at best marginally popular, or which have a cult following, or where I'm one of the few people I know who really likes it, or where there's no fandom for it. So I'm fairly used to that.

Sort of... I've written fic for an obscure comic that has no fandom whatsoever. I've never posted it anywhere and I don't think I ever will, because I'd feel really embarrassed and self-conscious being the only person writing fic for this thing that no one else has even heard of.

I've been in some tiny fandoms, but not the... actually, scrap that. Chasing Charlie Duskin by Cath Crowley. Where are you, fellow fans??

How did you transition from fandom friend to fandom friends who call and write letters?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-02 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I'm at that stage with one of my fandom friends, we've been pretty close for six months and talk a lot about our real life, share pictures, check in throughout the week about things on our schedule we shared. I really want to get their real life address because I want to send them some things but I've never made this transition before and it's hard to tell if it's too soon or what.

I think this is a misfire. But I also think that what you do is you find something that you think they'd like or make them a present and then say "What's your address? I want to send you a present (I totally get it if you don't to share it, I just saw something and thought you'd like it)" or something like that, listen, I don't know, what am I, Mary Worth

I have a couple of these. I have to admit, I've chickened out of posting fic.

I did have one though where I mentioned my fandom-of-one in some spaces where fans of similar shows hung out, and some of them got into it creating a tiny little fandom, but one where the odd fic from anyone is much appreciated. So that worked out.

Quite a few years ago I was the only person (other than people on Nifty) writing fic about two British soaps, and I was the first person to write about three different bands (also not counting Nifty!), but for the soaps I was just having fun and wasn't particularly interested in reading or writing more. And I wasn't alone very long for the bands. I liked feedback but I never really wanted anybody to squee with for them anyway. Ugh, make that...five bands. I was quite the little trailblazer, apparently!

I am, as far as I can tell, pretty much the only person who posts Sneakers or Misfits of Science fic. But most of my fandoms are tiny; I'm one of about three people who post Max Headroom fic, for example. And I'm not terribly prolific these days - I do a couple of big bangs per year, and Yuletide, and that's all I have time for.

I...I might need to look into this.

I'm technically in a fandom of one, but that's because the work I'm a fan of isn't actually published anywhere - it's my partner's still-in-the-works webcomic.

I still totally write fic for it, though, and I'll totally post it everywhere when it's finally made public. I don't even care if I'm the only one who does :P

Yes. I love the show Hope Springs, and last I checked, my short Yuletide treat fic is the only fic that exists online for that fandom. I've been half-heartedly trying to create a fandom for a while, but I don't think I have the pull, or the time, to really do so. I have found some screenshots on Tumblr, but there isn't a big fandom on there, either, and I don't bother with the tag because it's mostly unrelated stuff.

I didn't feel awkward about posting my fic, no. I mean, especially not since it was for Yuletide (so obviously there was at least one other person who was interested), but even in general, it's not something I feel awkward about. I'd post more fics if I wrote more. That said, I do feel more self-conscious about posting fics in extremely small fandoms because I know the chances are higher that anyone who does seek out fic will see mine. So my fics may not be seen by more people overall, but they'll stand out more and be seen by a higher percentage of the fandom. That is a little scary.

Mostly, it's just hard to stay enthusiastic about Hope Springs without inspiration and feedback from other fans. Also, to be fair, it was a very short show with limited canon.

ETA: Also, I did create a Hope Springs community: [community profile] hopesprings_hotel. However, there's nothing on it right now. I should post my fic, but I was going to try to make the comm pretty first. My attempt to make a header failed miserably.

I was more or less a fandom of one for a year or so. It was really lonely, but I just kept posting things about how great the people in question were anyway. I didn't write fic or anything, so I didn't post any fanworks, and there wasn't a community for it, but I never felt awkward about throwing my squees all over Twitter and LJ.

Somehow my persistence paid off and now it's a healthy little fandom, mostly on Tumblr :)

Yesss and it felt a bit awkward, but every now and then I get little notification that someone has added my story to their fave or follows and I feel bad for abandoning it...
