Fan Dumb isn't restricted to that other group of crazy stupid fans over there, right? You, yes you, have probably held, and may have loudly wanked over and spouted off about, a really dumb fandom-related opinion that you used to hold. You might be embarrassed that you ever held that opinion, but this is the place to confess and laugh about it!

I once considered seme/uke just a harmless little kink.

Well, I still think it's mostly a harmless little kink, but I am pretty embarrassed I ever used to think that was how gay relationships actually work.

Yeah, this. The seme/uke thing is kind of like Harlequin romance novels; it's OK to like them, but if you think they are what real life is like... that's probably not good.

Whenever I get interested in a new fandom, I begin insisting that the source material is high-quality. I will bend over backwards to find something about it that is praiseworthy. I get prickly when people dismiss it as worthless or bad.

A few years later, I may or may not look back and say "wow, that show sucked".

Anything a character did could be justified or rightly ignored if I found the actor attractive.

Oh, the horrible things I used to overlook...

You know how some fans will bash female characters for doing [insert thing here], but then turn around and fawn over male characters who also did that?

I used to do that with the genders reversed. I would make excuses for any female characters, then bash male characters who did the same things as those female characters.

Oh none of this is as embarrassing as my first fandom experience. It was pretty much my first foray into the real world. I was extremely heteronormative in a slash-dominated fandom, I thought it was just a kink, and hated them all intensely. I never stirred up any wank because I was mostly sticking around ffn at that stage, but the feeling was there.

Anyway, I moved to LJ and grew up. I honestly believe that without fandom, I would be a much more unlikeable person than I already am.

In my defense, over in that fandom, slash was a kink for them. Looking back, that was very terrible and offensive of them.

I had a het OTP. I was devoted to it. I genuinely believed (and probably occasionally said) that the minority in fandom who shipped the dude with another dude didn't mean it and were just trying to be *edgy* and piss off the het shippers. Which was really unfair, because we really cared, damnit it. How dare they ship their horribly slash just to make us upset?

I was thirteen and very sheltered, but I still cringe.

Let's just say that I was an oppressed het shipper and flamed a bunch of ff.net stories for not writing my het ship. I was seriously convinced that they hated straight people.

In the 90's, I hated Sega because I was a Nintendo fanbrat. It's not my fault. My dad subscribed to beautiful propaganda that was Nintendo Power.

I never felt this way about Playstation though, just Sega, and I think it's because at least Sony's "anti" ads were at least cute than outright dumb.

That a gen fic with a background side character pairing is "less gen" if said pairing is slash instead of het.

I was a huge Disney stan and hated all the other animated movies, like Anastasia. How dare they make a princess movie??!!11
