but can't ask about because everyone immediately descends into petty wank. What do you do when all you want is a straight answer?

Find people you trust to ask, I guess, or who you know can be reasonable about it. Or read sources from all sides.

I've felt this a few times and I've asked about such things here on FS page 2. Be honest about what it is you don't understand, and people can usually read that you aren't being a dick about it

I'll ask someone if I think I can do so without being offensive, or try to look it up.

The main reason I hesitate to ask people is because there's a chance of getting OMG UR SO LAZY Y U NO GOOGLE ASSHOLE but...I think actual accounts from people are more reliable than Google. Plus it's easier, and if the tables are turned I really don't mind answering peoples' questions if they ask.

That's not to say I never Google, but sometimes I think I can get a better or MUCH easier answer if I ask someone who is part of the conversation.

(Even then I don't always, for fear of looking like an ignorant jerk. And there are some topics I just stay out of or don't discuss deeply because I really don't know much about them and as such can't really contribute anything, and am more likely to just be an accidental jerk.)

Well, I think it's probably a better idea to ask someone you know one-on-one rather than in a community, because it reduces the chance of Y U NO GOOGLE and it means that they're less likely to think you're a jerk, or if they do think that, they're more likely to make allowances.

Of course, that assumes that you do know someone who knows more about it than you do.

You know, I don't actually mind answering questions when I think I know what I'm talking about, but I certainly hope I'm, or someone else is, not the only source a questioner ever bothers with. I like to think people do their own research, that is to say check all sides of an argument even those that may seem contrary. Some people are wary of finding misinformation on google (eg: landing on a trolly mra blog), but there's also a chance that the person you're asking has the wrong idea, or has only a facet of an argument (eg: the variety of definitions, restrictions, and meanings "queer" can be to different individuals and groups).

Being part of the conversation as you put it doesn't necessarily make you a reliable info dumper either. Being part of it means you have to keep up learning, challenging yourself, and admit that you may be wrong imo.

It also might be old forum and 4chan habits kicking in for me, but I also wish people would LURK MORE before asking something that might already have been answered previously in regards to not-so controversial junk like storylines or memes or in-jokes or etiquette and so on.

That's very true. I've been guilty of laziness many a time - but it's important to look at a variety of sources, including people and your own research.
