Most people use some internet speak, and it's so ingrained in our society that I think it would be next to impossible for most people to stop.

I can see why it might be annoying, tho. :(

(COULDN'T RESIST.)

Re: tho

(Anonymous) 2013-03-02 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
"Tho" is an informal, currently technically incorrect variant spelling of "though", which is a real word. So "tho" is a real word, just a wrong spelling.

I must admit it's hard to argue that it's the wrong spelling when it retains every letter of the word which is actually pronounced.

Re: tho

yes

Re: tho

[personal profile] drakontion 2013-03-02 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm ok with 'tho'. I hate it when people abbreviate though as 'thou'.

'Thou' is an actual word with archaic usage and is not meant to be used in that fashion!

...same when they say 'awe' instead of 'awww'. No. No no no no no!

Unless their native language is Internet and don't know English, they probably know but shorten it because typespeak. Do you also get mad when people use other Internet slang on the Internet?

Yes? I use it anyway tho.

(Also, DW seems to think it's a real word - doesn't underline it in red. Perhaps it is a word that means something else)

Neither are a lot of colloquialisms. Just because it's a written shorthand doesn't mean it's not a valid informal expression.

Whether it's to your taste or not is another matter entirely, and I'd certainly object to its presence in more formal writing, but apart from that, it's rather silly to pick and choose what common shorthands are valid and what aren't.

I've learned to accept internet shorthand, but I work in print advertising and they constantly have us use "thru" in ads. I can't even.
