A weird place to ask but

(Anonymous) 2013-03-03 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
I seem to have really bad acne. It's driving me crazy since I'm now in my mid-20s and no product I use seems to get rid of it. Does anyone have any suggestions that could help? I'm embarrassed to go outside.

If you can afford it, see a dermatologist who will be able to recommend stronger treatments without damaging your skin.

I can't, the only way to see a dematologist here is to go through a GP and they never listen to problems until you're nearly dead. Our health care system is a nightmare so I was looking for ways to solve it without that route.

I've heard that Extra Virgin Olive Oil is actually very good for it (and even helps with scars and such), BUT, it really has to be genuine Extra Virgin Oil. If it's a knockoff and/or just regular Olive Oil, it'll make the acne worse

definitely check with a dermatologist if it's within your means

This sounds like bullshit.

Have you tried paying attention to your diet? I've noticed if I eat a lot of certain foods I'll tend to break out more, then clear up when I stop eating them or just cut back. That probably won't clear up everything, but if you do have foods that are making you break out it might help to get rid of them.

As someone who is obsessive about skin care and has a family history of crappy skin, here's my routine. You need four products - an astringent (http://www.cleanandclear.com/product/astringents-toners/essentials-deep-cleaning-astringent), benzoyl peroxide (http://www.neutrogena.com/product/on-the-spot-+acne+treatment.do), a cleanser (http://www.neutrogena.com/product/deep+clean+cream+cleanser.do) and some apricot scrub (http://www.stives.com/Facial-Products/Fresh-Skin/Invigorating-Apricot-Scrub/).

Use the cleanser every morning. Every morning and before going to bed, use the astringent and on-the-spot. Once a week, use the apricot scrub (preferably in the shower, because the little scratchy bits get everywhere and you can rinse them off easier).

Drink as much water as you can stand, follow this regimen, and your skin is going to be fine in a couple of months.

Maybe try the Oil Cleansing Method? http://www.theoilcleansingmethod.com/ I see people saying it helps them on the forums I hang on; there's all sorts of oil mixtures, etc. Just google it.

Also, you might want to try coconut oil--a lot people swear by it in reducing their acne and it did help me too, I think. Some people say it breaks them out, which may be a good thing or not.

Be warned though. When you first something, you may break out more, and that might be a good thing as it's pulling the impurities up to the skin and trying to eliminate them, so you'll break out less. Or maybe it's just clogging your pores. It really hard to tell until you've used it for a while, unfortunately (Retin-A and its derivatives are famous for this and a lot of people quit it early not realizing it's actually working correctly. I can't afford it anymore.).

I've had success w/using a St. Ives Apricot face scrub w/salcylic acid a few times a week. I alternate that w/a St. Ives clay mask (with really helps w/the redness and getting rid of pimples). Both are cheap at around less than $5 each. Maybe you can similar products where you live? Or they have that brand?

I know it sounds weird, but face (and body) had gotten really dry and irritated and I'd bought some of that ph-balanced vaginal wash soap by Summer's Eve (the unscented kind)to use and it worked and felt really gentle and not drying, so I decided to try it all over. It's fabulous stuff. My face feels really clean (it squeaks even!), but I don't have that tight, dry, peeling going on anymore and my body feels more moisturized too and it was less than $5 also. https://www.summerseve.com/products/cleansing-wash
