I still haven't seen Season 5 and I honestly don't feel like I'm missing much.

I've started to think of characters as completely different characters from season to season and I usually have to "pick" one when trying for a characterization in any other fics or AUs (and I almost always pick the initial appearance over anything else - snarky big sis Morgana beats evil cutout Morgana anyday).

You aren't. You really really aren't :(

It's not even that I have high expectations, since the overall campiness is what draws me in, but the series feels like it wastes so many ideas. Instead of being the au it initially was (what if Merlin was a teen, and met Arthur in his teens also!), and subverting these characters by imagining them in different situations, it rolls back into some awful melodrama that retells the myths in a half-baked fashion.

Snarky big sis Morgana vs Dastardly Morgana isn't even a competition.

And Gwen's characterization bothers me because it's like everything that was introduced about her was pushed aside to make her all about being in love with Arthur. She had a background as a blacksmith, her father was murdered due to mistrial, she had friendships and relationships with other characters. And then where did it all go? aruthruarthurarthurahruthAUGH—
