[Billie Piper - Doctor Who/Secret Diary of a Call Girl]

So you like women better when they shut up and spread their legs? Got it. How very novel of you.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-03 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Pretty sure secret maker said this particular person, and not women as a whole.

Might wanna check your knee-jerk levels there.

Her performance was definitely the best thing about that show, she seemed to be having a lot of fun with it. The adorableness of Billie Piper as Belle could almost compensate for how terrible the writing was. Almost.

I prefer her in Secret Diary as well but I'm also not a fan of Dr Who.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-03 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Who allowed her to be photographed with that hair in the first pic!?
fauxkaren: (Default)

[personal profile] fauxkaren 2013-03-03 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I love her in both. Rose is gr8. Belle and Hannah are gr8. Billie's pop career is gr8.

I just really like Billie Piper, tbh.

If you couldn't stand her as Rose but like her as Belle, that's totally fine. Different characters, different strokes. But you can bet your ass that your specific reasons are making me side-eye the fuck out of you.

[personal profile] fauxkaren 2013-03-03 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's also interesting that OP specifically notes that she likes BELLE and not Hannah. So add that to the other parts of the secret and I'm side-eying a bit too.

While it's certainly common enough to like the same actor in multiple roles, it's not weird to only like them in a few. After all, the characters are different people, and if 'the actor' is a main reason to like or dislike someone, that's a bit skin deep, isn't it?

I can hardly think of two television series with less in common than Doctor Who and Secret Diary of a Call Girl. It's not terribly surprising to like one and not the other.

I always thought she looked funny looking (like her nose and her eyebrows), but as the other girl her hair really makes her look better and even attractive/pretty. I never thought about that when I saw pictures of her in Doctor Who.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-03 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I always thought she looked kind of... weird. There's something something about her mouth that looks a bit scary. But in the Secret Diary photos, she usually has her hair/make-up done a lot better than in DW.

Hadly. A better role is just that.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-03 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
The important thing is that in the second one she bangs the guy from Heavy Rain.

I like her persona in DW but I don't think she was written well =/

Haven't seen the other show.

I guess I don't understand why feminists hate prostitutes so much. They own their bodies and what they want to do with it is their business. Granted, I stopped watching Secret Diary after a season and a half because we had to drop showtime, but it never seemed like she was forced to sell her body.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-03 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, that's sort of the point- on Secret Diary, Belle was a prostitute really because she loved sex, made great money and loved it, and hated/found "normal" jobs "boring." I imagine the feminist critique of SDCG is that it glamorizes prostitution, because those aren't the reasons most women turn to the sex trade. Belle is also fairly wealthy, particularly by the end of the show, which I would also assume is fairly atypical of actual prostitutes.

The show never claims to be an accurate portrayal of real-life prostitution, but Belle's life is pretty glamorous. So I could see why feminists would criticize that as romanticizing the industry as a whole.

Who are you talking to, jw?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-03 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Not really agreeing with your reasoning here, but I definitely agree that the characters are as different as night and day. The shows themselves are, too, which must have been intentional on Billie's part.

Personally I love both shows and both characters, but it's still really stunning how completely different they are. It's almost hard to believe the same person played both roles.

On a more shallow note, Belle/Hannah is definitely better dressed/made-up than Rose. I thought Rose was adorable and charming, but her makeup was pretty atrocious at times and her wardrobe was nothing special. Obviously the "Belle" persona is meant to be glamorous, but even Hannah dressed better than Rose.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-03 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I think, to some people, Belle is just a more likeable character. I found her equally smart, powerful, sexy, and funny in both roles, but Rose isn't everyone's cup of tea. I don't think she is this, but I think she CAN come off as too love-interest-focused in Series 2, and a little to over-the-top-perfect. Again, I adored every second of both Rose and Belle, but I can see why she'd annoy some people.

If you don't like Donna, though, I don't know what to do with you.
