I feel like they get into Slytherin because of the way they were raised, not that they leave Slytherin being like that because of the house itself. Death Eaters will tend to have Death Eater children and Slytherins will probably raise Slytherin children. One doesn't necessarily require the other, but it just sort of happens that way.

I expect a lot of them, maybe most of them, do go into Slytherin because their parents were in Slytherin and they see it as a good thing, and their parents have been guiding them in that direction. But they're starting seven years of boarding school for, what, nine months out of the year? That is a hell of a lot of opportunity to teach them something else.

Realistically, if Hogwarts didn't have the Slytherin option that particular facet of wizarding society would probably have their own wizarding school of nastiness, or do home schooling of nastiness. But it just feels wrong to have these kids at the school and not even try to show them they have other options.

I'm not really a Harry Potter fan and I remember stopping after the fourth book/movie so I may be off here, but isn't Draco Malfoy himself a perfect example of 'this is what happened when you stereotype people'?

Yes he was petty and nasty and vile to Harry and anyone he deemed below him (all the credit goes to his horrible parents) but when push came to shove and he was forced to be a real Slytherin and serve Voldemort like a Death Eater, he recoiled from the horror.

...so obviously this is one Slytherin who could've maybe turned out even a LITTLE better with proper Hogwarts guidances. (sorry that I can't give more examples but I really don't know other Slytherins too well. >>)
