No!!! Really???? It's not like this exact thing was one of the main messages of the whole series or anything!

Well, if it was supposed to be a dystopia, then she did a good job. Opinions on whether it's supposed to be a dystopia seem to vary, judging by the other comments here.

I think my problem with these books is I noticed dystopic aspects before the viewpoint character did, I got tone whiplash, and I lost patience with the weaknesses in the worldbuilding and refused to cut it some slack elsewhere.

The worldbuilding was certainly not weak.

You honestly sound like you think you're much more clever than you actually are.

The worldbuilding couldn't even come up with a consistent student body size for the school.

the worldbuilding kept flip-flopping all over the place

The worldbuilding was totally weak. Inconsistencies abounded. Where did wizarding kids learn their reading, writing, and 'rithmatic? JK said Molly homeschooled her kids, but plenty of wizarding families in the books seem to have both parents working, so where do those families send their kids to learn the basics? If there's a wizarding primary school, why don't the kids already know each other before they get to Hogwarts? If they go to a muggle primary school, why are they so stunningly ignorant about the way the muggle world works? And that's just the holes in the education system!

The books are filled with issues like that. Doesn't mean they're bad books, but JKR's worldbuilding did, in fact, kind of suck.

there's such an easy answer to that, too: just mention that there are commonly governesses/private teachers for wizards. Boom, problem solved.

There are actually a lot of problems with HP that could be solved with a simple line here or there...

And poor families that can't hire a separate person or stay at home themselves to teach their kids?

Also, what happens when the homeschooling parent is a terrible speller? Or terrible at math?

They have currency with denominations in large prime numbers and no visible mandatory mathematics courses. That's shitty world building.

Re: OP

I thought that was just a joke about the real life older money system in England

I think the problem is that many aspects of wizarding culture started as jokes as the books were aimed at children, but then when they got more serious later on, the jokes remained and clashed with everything else

I noticed them too, but I think that too was kinda the point? That we were supposed to be frustrated about Harry's daftness/naivete at times?
