I'm a little nervous about this, because my HP memories are fuzzy, but here goes:

How does the epilogue fit into this this? because if the point of series arc was a loss of innocence and a recognition of moral ambiguity, the epilogue seems to reject that. It glosses over any kind of adult growth or change.

Well, the way I see it: the epilogue is only nineteen years later. There's evidence of minor personal changes between the characters, but to imply that the entire wizarding world was overhauled in nineteen years would have been silly and unrealistic. Like, since when has that ever happened in the history of ever?

But mostly: JKR apparently wrote the epilogue very early on and I think she got lazy about rewriting it to incorporate and touch on the more important themes, and instead focused on "omg it's the next generation of Hogwarts kids for you fans to write fanfic about, aren't they cute??" at the expense of following up on broader ideas.

Well, actually, post-civil-war periods like that often do make very major changes very quickly, at least in terms of institutions. Sometimes it takes a lot longer for the changes to make their way through societies, but it seems to me it would have been the perfect moment for someone to say "Why don't we re-Sort every year?" or something.

Yeah that's true. I chalk it up mostly to lazy writing. I don't think the epilogue actually contradicts the rest of the series, it just...seriously fails to make a grab at an obvious opportunity to add something meaningful to it. Still, the questions mean there's all the more fodder for fic, I suppose ;)

Resorting every year would be AWESOME!! If I was there I think I would constantly be rotating between Hufflepuff and Gryffendor.

Because, I'm not brilliant, so no Ravenclaw, and I'm not cutthroat ambitious (that's how I always interpreted Slytherin)

But now that I'm typing it out, that might make it way too complicated. Maybe offer the option of another sorting? You know, team free will? And if the student wanted to stay with their house, there would be no ill will?

lol, I'm putting too much thought into this hypothetical fictional scenario.

I think forcing the re-sorting would be better; I imagine most students wouldn't want to be seen as traitors to their House and would refuse, whether they really wanted to or not

it would also force them to spend time with students they would never associate with, and like learn friendship and stuff

Even civil wars where the establishment wins? Because that is what happened, Volde rebelled and the forces of the establishment crushed him and his followers. Usually when the pre-existing power structure crushes a rebellion its business as usual pretty quickly.

HP is a pretty pro-reactionary text when you think about it. Status quo must prevail.

I think a lot can change in 19 years, honestly. Not everything, but the way she showed it? it could have been a lot different.

ia with your reasoning re: the epilogue, though. It was just a tack-on for squees. It doesn't really upset me, though. It was cute, if a bit lacking, and I think fandom does a pretty good job of filling in and even altering a bit the way the future might have looked. In fact it makes it fun, to be able to make some of that up and do a bit of your own worldbuilding. =3

True, I guess it could have been a lot different, but I don't think it had to be a lot different. I don't think it was a case of "whoops, if it's not totally different, then overthrowing Voldemort was a total failure". But yeah, IA, explaining why it wasn't a lot different is definitely good fanfic inspiration.
