Well, we sort of get episodes like that. I think the one episode with that horrible flesh-absorbing Fat Bastard was a really good one for that. It was entirely from the perspective of someone who watches the Doctor come and save the day. Same thing with Blink.

But yeah, most of those episodes didn't involve the Doctor much anyway.
