Well, we sort of get episodes like that. I think the one episode with that horrible flesh-absorbing Fat Bastard was a really good one for that. It was entirely from the perspective of someone who watches the Doctor come and save the day. Same thing with Blink.

But yeah, most of those episodes didn't involve the Doctor much anyway.

Feel free to put this down under "things I didn't know I wanted as badly as I want my own computer until now."

Wasn't that "Love and Monsters?" And also "Blink?"

Also known as the "two episodes I found to be the most boring ever" ....

(Anonymous) 2013-03-05 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
...good for you?

How could someone not like Blink? It's, like, the only episode in which the Weeping Angels are interesting and not overly-explored, retconned, etc.

But those were Doctor-lite. You can have a Doctor-heavy episode that looks at him from the perspective of another character. Like Rose or Smith and Jones.

That is the greatest screencap I have ever seen in my life. I love you for introducing it to me. Just thought I'd let you know.

More OT, I always thought a Doctor Who version of Buffy's "The Zeppo" would be three different kinds of awesome ;)

Where the Doctor fights some random evil that we never see while [insert companion here] fights and defeats the episode's main villain? Depending on the companion, that could be really fun. Especially with the Doctor flitting in and out jabbering about the unseen evil thing.

...we have?

What about the 2009 specials, the ones with Jackson Lake, Christina de Souza, and Adelaide Brooke? People call them "one-off companions," but they're essentially secondary characters who meet up with the Doctor and have one adventure with him. Of course, Christina and Jackson fit this mold a bit better than Adelaide, but still.

ETA: Also, Craig.

See above, there are episodes like that

Oh my god your background pic made me snort soda out of my nose. :D

That image is a perfect encapsulation of what a regular episode of Doctor Who is. Batty-looking intense guy being all in-charge; matter-of-fact cat nun chatting with him going "yep, I'm a cat nun and this is perfectly 100% normal"; and weird-looking other guy going "omgwtfbbq???" in the background ;)

Gridlock is one of those episodes that I think should be mandatory on any list of episodes to show people you're trying to rope into watching Doctor Who. Because it's not a hugely impressive outlier like Blink; it's an ordinary monster-of-the-week Doctor Who adventure, one that just so happens to be a single episode that you can point to and go "Yeah, um, that's the show in a nutshell. Just so you know what you're getting yourself in for."

IA. I mean, it's probably about average quality-wise, but it has a little bit of everything of new Who: Ridiculous-looking aliens being treated and taken totally seriously, rather anvilicious social message that's kind of endearing in its honesty, lots of epic Time War angst, goofy monsters that manage to be kind of scary anyway because they're not wrapped up with all that trendy medium-awareness, the Doctor being a complete awesome lunatic and talking about all kinds of hilarious shit, really sincere emotional moments all about big ideas like the human spirit and whatnot portrayed with a lack of irony that's rare on TV nowadays, really memorable one-off and supporting characters, companion being a BAMF and not letting the Doctor act all too-cool-for-school.

And then there's that scene where the Doctor's carhopping between all those different what-crack-were-the-writers-smoking-anyway-can-I-have-some slices of life, just to drive all that scope and inventiveness home.
