Yes, but a crying audience tends to be an easy way to success so sometimes you'll have a movie shove some clichéd, calculated tragedy in your face solely in an attempt to make you tear up, whether or not it's actually relevant to the story. Old lonely people and loyal pets are particularly common for this. Even better if they die.
