And I can see what you mean about trying the emotional chords. In reality, every sad, tragic, or unhappy moment in film is the same thing. The difference is whether it feels natural or if it's hidden well. Usually I think it is...but as much as I loved Toy Story 3, a lot of that movie felt very forced. I understand they wanted an emotional, satisfying ending, but there's something very false about the sort of adulation Andy showered on his toys at the ending.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-05 12:37 am (UTC)(link)Seriously, even Ratatouille was a better movie than Brave. Brave barely managed to avoid being completely forgettable and it was 100% to do with Mom Bear.

I'm not holding my breath for 'Monsters University' (not after 'Cars 2', man), and tbqh, mother/daughter stories do absolutely nothing for me (long story) and the way they treated Brenda Chapman during production soured me on 'Brave'. (Might catch that one on TV someday, I dunno)

WARNING: OPINIONS
Also, playing to the audience's emotional strings??? Like all movies (and all media) trying to tell a story don't do that? This is a wank generating buzz phrase that really means nothing. What you mean is what you said in the next sentence: the emotional content felt disingenuous and manipulative. Well, the same could be said for any story, especially coming out of Hollywood. People like money. Movies that make an impact on the audience tend to make money.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-05 01:09 am (UTC)(link)However, I think that most of the drama in the their movies is very well-done and, to be honest, if it works it works. Yes they manipulate your emotions-that's what movies are SUPPOSED to do. There's no such thing as one movie's emotional moments being more genuine than another's because it's all made up anyway. If the audience really feels it (and with Pixar films, they usually do) then it's genuine. Period.
Though I didn't think Brave deserved to win this year. I wanted Wreck-It-Ralph to win (and I thought Paranorman was extremely overrated).

I'm STILL not a fan of computer animation, though, so my opinion's out the door.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-05 01:38 am (UTC)(link)People have been saying for years that the award has been going downhill, but they still get upset when the "right" move doesn't win. I don't get it.

I'd try to ignore the Oscars though. They're just a pain.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-05 03:35 am (UTC)(link)And in some aspects, Pixar can be pretty manipulative with playing on the audience's emotions, but sometimes it works because it seems more natural.

I also really enjoyed Brave but am actually fairly surprised that it won. The only other nominee I'd seen this year was ParaNorman which was ... okay, definitely a much better movie than I expected it to be, but ultimately I would say Brave was probably better, just for how amazing it looked.
However I am pretty sure Wreck-It-Ralph will be my favourite animated movie of the year, once I actually get to see it.
