WARNING: OPINIONS

[personal profile] fingalsanteater 2013-03-05 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
I think Dreamworks and more recent Disney films are pretty terrible. I'm not saying all Pixar movies are superior, but overall I have more favorites from Pixar.

Also, playing to the audience's emotional strings??? Like all movies (and all media) trying to tell a story don't do that? This is a wank generating buzz phrase that really means nothing. What you mean is what you said in the next sentence: the emotional content felt disingenuous and manipulative. Well, the same could be said for any story, especially coming out of Hollywood. People like money. Movies that make an impact on the audience tend to make money.

I think so too (that Pixar had better movies than Dreamworks and Disney). But seriously? I find it so weird that Toy Story 3, which I liked, beat out The Illusionist. Or that Ratatouille beat Persepolis.

DA

Still mad about Persepolis.

THIS.
It doesn't help that soon after the Oscar went to the rat movie, some Pixar stans tried to convince me that Persepolis was a fake story and just created to make westerners feel bad for "terrorists".

Seriously? I didn't know that. D: That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard of. Ratatouille is one of my favorite films, but Persepolis was more 'Oscar-y'. Honestly, you can't compare the two movies. Yeah, they're both animated but the genres are totally different.

Oh man, The Illusionist ;_;

So lovingly animated, charming, and bittersweet (though imo sometimes overly understated). Also read that Tati's living relatives and biographer strongly dislike Chomet's adaptation and are not shy about it -- wondering if that was a big enough controversy to dissuade some votes.

Of course every film is aiming for an emotional response from their audience, but I feel like Pixar really overdoes it, if that makes sense. When I watch some of the Pixar films and a sad scene comes on, I feel like I'm being whacked over the head with a mallet or there's a little Pixar exective skipping in front of me with a sign screaming "FEEL SAD NOW."

I don't really see that, but okay.

I feel that way, especially during Jessie's Sarah McLachlan song in Toy Story 2. It's like the commercials with the puppies. CAN YOU TRY HARDER TO MAKE ME UPSET?

idk I get really emotional easily at movies and I like a movie that makes me sob and then gives me a happy ending. It's cheesy and dumb but I think it's refreshing. I don't watch Pixar for the incredibly deep and ingenious writing; I watch it for the fluff and the feelz.

different strokes etc.

That's a movies goal, but I like to be a little more optimistic and thing some of the storytellers in a studio want to do just that.

Yeah, excusing a select few out of recent years, Pixar does actually do better than it's usual competition. Not always, but usually.

Triplets of Bellville, Persepolis, The Illusionist. And I know that if it were nominated, Mary and Max would've given Up a run for it's money. I'm not trying to be an animation snob, Ratatouille is one of my favorite films and it beat Persepolis. I'm just confused by the how films that are more 'Oscar-material' (story/content wise)are passed over for family features. Pixar isn't the only one. Rango beat Chico and Rita and I was genuinely mega-pissed about that.
