I think ParaNorman was the one that deserved to win. Wreck-it-Ralph was cute but generic. Frankenweenie I didn't like, and I didn't see Pirates!.

I loved Brave, loved it, but ParaNorman was better. Stunning animation, and a story that took some real risks. Not talking about the by-the-way-I'm-gay character, either. The witch was a little girl, murdered for being weird and unnerving to the people in her town. Holy shitballs, when's the last time a film went there? Let alone a kid's film?

ParaNorman only became remotely interesting to me in the very last part of the movie. Every character except the girl you described was painfully generic.

Really? I thought the character in Paranorman had way more life to them than WiR, save for maybe Ralph. I loved how raw and real the dialogue was, and the bit at the end with the older brother being gay? It came out of nowhere, it was great!

Norman was completely unlikeable to me, to be honest. I know we're supposed to feel sorry for him because he gets bullied, and I do, but he's also just...so. BLAND. There is NOTHING interesting about him aside from the fact that he can see ghosts, which is more of an ability and less of a personality trait. Then there's his older sister which is basically every horrid snobby older teenage sister archetype rolled into one character, and his buddy who fills the typical "fat and dopey friend of the protagonist" role. I don't remember a single thing about the jock except that he was gay, and probably only because everyone made a huge deal out of it.

So yeah. I know it's just my opinion, but that's why I can't understand why the movie gets so much praise. The decent plot and admittedly great animation weren't enough to save it from the awful characterization.

I didn't think WIR was generic, but I agree with this entire comment. ParaNorman was amazing.

I actually disliked ParaNorman and found it boring but it got HUGE props from me for having a non-stereotypical gay character (who was also really hot for being a cartoon.) I would have rather seen it win over Brave.

WIR was my favorite animated movie of the year and I was devastated that it lost. Pirates! is probably too British for most Americans but I thought it was kinda fun.
